Update from C*C regarding a riverbank slippage affecting the Public Right of Way adjacent to Link Road Bridge, New Earswick:

Following a recent City of York Council review of the site, including discussions with engineering and asset management teams, they have identified that the condition of the riverbank along footpath 29/10/10 has deteriorated further since the original engineering assessment carried out by WSP. As a result, the Council has taken the decision to temporarily close the affected section of the footpath, whilst further investigations are undertaken, and a permanent engineering solution is developed.

Highway Operations have been instructed to install additional temporary barriers to secure the affected area, and we are progressing the necessary Temporary Traffic Regulation Order (TTRO) to formalise the closure.

At the same time, WSP have been asked to undertake further engineering assessments of the site, to better understand the extent of the deterioration and to develop a long-term remediation solution. This will include consideration of the riverbank stability, drainage infrastructure and statutory approvals required before permanent works can commence.

City of York Council appreciate the temporary closure will be disappointing and frustrating for local users, but public safety must remain an overriding priority whilst they establish the most appropriate long-term solution.

We will continue to keep you updated as the programme progresses and once, we have a clearer understanding of the proposed engineering solution and anticipated timescales.

⚠️ Hopgrove Roundabout & main carriageway resurfacing – July & August

🔄We’re resurfacing the A64 Hopgrove Roundabout and sections of the A64 between Hopgrove and Grimston Bar this summer. Some areas will also get refreshed road markings.

This scheme had been planned for Autumn this year. However, this work has been brought forward due to recent surface deterioration.

🌃To keep disruption down, all work will take place overnight (8pm–6am) with phased closures over five weeks:

6 July
• Hopgrove Roundabout inner ring closed
• Diversions via A1237, Little Hopgrove and Grimston Bar

7–10 & 13–15 July
• Hopgrove Roundabout: eastbound open, westbound closed
• Through‑westbound traffic diverted via local authority routes
• Local westbound via city centre

20–24 July
• A64 westbound closed at Hopgrove
• Diversions via Little Hopgrove, city centre or A1237

27–28 July
• Link between Hopgrove & Little Hopgrove closed
• Diversions via Grimston Bar and city centre

30 July
• NW section of roundabout + link to Little Hopgrove closed
• Eastbound diverted via A1237/A19/A170/A169
• Local westbound via city centre

3–7 August
• A64 eastbound closed at Grimston Bar
• Diversions via city centre or A1237

🚗Please allow extra time for your journey. All closures may change at short notice depending on progress and weather.
