Standing tall and proud in the churchyard of St. Nicholas Church, Hurst is a monument to the bravery of village soldiers in two World Wars. Though visible from the road, the war memorial rarely attracts attention except as the centrepiece for the Remembrance Sunday service. The twelve feet high celtic cross in rough hewn granite was built as a fitting tribute to the men who gave their lives in the

Great War; the 'war to end all wars'. Twenty years later that aspiration faded with the start of the Second World War and a new inscription was added to commemorate the soldiers who fell in that conflict.

Thursday 8th May 2025 marks the 80th anniversary of VE Day, one of the most significant days of the Second World War. Hurst will be celebrating in style with activities during the evening at and around the community orchard, followed by lighting the beacon.

Visit https://www.warmemorial.org.uk/ww2 where you can read the stories of some of the 26 men of Hurst who gave their lives and are named on our village war memorial. Some of those men are buried in the St.Nicholas churchyard.

We are always looking for people interested in researching the lives of these men, and if you would like to help fill in the gaps in their stories then please do get in touch: https://www.warmemorial.org.uk/contact
