We loved seeing students from Kirk Hallam Community Academy visit Ilkeston Town Hall last week!

The School Council held debates in the chamber with a secret ballot to decide the outcomes, supported by Leader of the Council, Councillor James Dawson, Deputy Mayor Councillor Linda Burns and Councillor Frank Phillips.

All the students put their arguments across very well in an official environment using microphones for the first time. They also got a brief history of the Town Hall and visited the Mayor’s Parlour.

They thoroughly enjoyed the debate, and we’ve even heard that the students are still talking about their visit!

Erewash’s street cleaning teams keep our communities looking their best!
Last year we announced an investment of £210,000 from the Erewash Investment Fund to support street cleaning efforts in our town centres.
Our teams work hard to keep our spaces tidy by maintaining public toilets, emptying litter bins, clearing rubbish, and quickly responding to any street cleaning requests you might have.
Let’s keep Erewash tidy together!

Erewash Walking Month is being hailed as a huge success by the borough council after record numbers took part.

Community Health and Wellbeing Development Officer Rachel Scott, who helped organise the 36 free guided strolls and events, said in a message to walk leaders, clubs and others who got behind the May initiative: “Huge thanks for all for your help and support.”

Around 583 people were tempted to join in the events. The total was up 33 on last year – despite nine fewer walks taking place this time round. Rachel said even more would have participated but were put off by showers on some days and sweltering heat on others. Of those who did take part 80 were entirely new to going for regular walks.

The red carpet will be rolled out for two brave little girls this weekend – as the thrilled pair are treated as “royals” for a day at Erewash’s biggest carnival.

A spectacular Saturday parade of floats will star Teha, 11, and Eliyah-rose, five, after both were nominated by the people of Long Eaton to be chauffeured through town in an open-top limo. Teha suffers from type 1 diabetes plus two autoimmune conditions.

She is described as “always smiling” – as is Eliyah-rose, who was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia a year ago.

Long Eaton’s carnival weekend, which centres on West Park and includes a funfair, kicks off with live music at 7pm on Friday.

Erewash’s Mayor will be there on Saturday – playing the keyboards with his Roadkill Blues Band. Long Eaton Carnival

What can you do if you’ve run out of liners?

✔️ You only need to use one liner per week- there's no need to change it daily
✔️ You don’t have to use liners – food waste can be placed loose in your grey kitchen caddy
✔️ If you prefer to use liners, they are widely available to buy from supermarkets and high street discount stores, usually costing around £1.50 a roll
✔️ Please make sure any liners you purchase are biodegradable, carry the seedling logo, and meet British Standard EN13432

Using liners can help keep your caddy cleaner, but it’s completely your choice whether to use them or not.

Art in action!
A bold and vibrant new street art mural has transformed Windsor Crescent, with artist Neil Keating bringing a burst of colour, creativity and energy to the heart of the neighbourhood.
And this is just the beginning! As part of the £6.5 million Erewash Investment Fund, the council has committed £100,000 to support official murals across the borough, helping to brighten public spaces, celebrate local identity and turn everyday places into eye-catching landmarks.

A triumphal-looking arch reminiscent of the iconic one at Wembley has been craned into place in one of Erewash’s towns – just in time for England’s first game of the World Cup finals.

The monumental metal structure in Long Eaton was constructed amid the countdown to football’s biggest tournament . . . and appears designed to gladden the hearts of England fans. But the borough council is stressing that any inspiration it gives to Harry Kane and his men is just a lucky coincidence.

The arch is actually part of a spectacular new canal bridge that is taking shape, Broad Street Bridge. The span over the Erewash canal is among a string of projects funded by £25m of “Town Deal” investment that the borough council clinched from the government.

Erewash’s new civic leader enjoyed two hours of what he described as “fantastic conversations” at the first in a series of meet-the-Mayor sessions.

Mayor of Erewash, Councillor Greg Maskalick said of the Saturday afternoon event at The General Havelock in Ilkeston: “I had a great time meeting great people – although I do apologise for my dire darts playing.”

The hostelry will be the venue for similar sessions every other month. In Long Eaton they will take place at the York Chambers pub, where the first event is on Saturday 11 July from 2pm to 4pm.

Meanwhile members of the 2nd Ilkeston Scout Group were thrilled when Greg chatted to them as he headed home from a council meeting. One said: “We thought we were just going for a night hike, we didn’t expect to meet the Mayor!”

Information from Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service relating to a fire on Heanor Road.

Derelict Building Fire, Ilkeston – 07:50 hours, Wednesday 10 June

Emergency services remain at the scene of a fire at a derelict building on Heanor Road in Ilkeston. Firefighting operations are expected to continue throughout the day.

Heanor Road has been closed by Derbyshire Constabulary and local diversions are in place. There is currently no impact on other buildings, local businesses or services, including schools.

Anyone who can see or smell smoke should keep their windows closed.

No further information is available.

A touching memorial to local people who have taken their own lives has been unveiled in an Erewash park – in the form of a bench that grieving families and friends hope will help deter others from su***de.

Plaques on it give hotline numbers – under the inscription: “Someone is always listening.”

The seat in a quiet corner of Ilkeston’s Victoria Park is thanks to two charities. One is the local arm of Survivors of Bereavement by Su***de - SOBS . The other is called Legend on the Bench, which is installing such benches nationwide and describes each one as “a place of comfort for those seeking it during dark times”.

Victoria Park’s was unveiled in a poignant ceremony led by Erewash’s Deputy Mayor Linda Burns.
