PRESS RELEASE: Care Home Closure - True cost of Tory Austerity
Labour Councillors in Cotmanhay have condemned the potential closure of Hazelwood Care Home.
Tory controlled Derbyshire County Council are now consulting with the local community on the possible closure of Hazelwood Elderly Persons Care Home on Skeavingtons Lane, Cotmanhay, Ilkeston.
The care home had been identified by the previous Labour administration as needing repair and refurbishment, adding 5 en-suite bedrooms, built to the latest CQC standards. The finance had also been put aside to carry out these repairs alongside two other care homes in Asbourne and Swanwick.
In November 2015 Erewash Tory MP Maggie Throup criticized Labour led DCC for the closure of Hillcrest Care home in Kirk Hallam saying:
“This is just the latest attack by the County Council on elderly people in Erewash, and I for one will not stand for it.
In light of announcement by the Chancellor in the Autumn Statement that councils are to be allowed to raise addition funds through the Council Tax to pay for social care, I will again be writing to the Cabinet Member responsible for Adult Social Care to ask him to pause this closure in order to reconsider the decision.”
Councillor Danny Treacy, Labour ward Councillor for Cotmanhay EBC, said:
“The new Tory administration is consulting the residents of Hazelwood, their relatives and the wider public to seek their views, whether to close or carry out essential repairs and refurbishment to Hazelwood.
I am confident the answer to that question is YES refurbishment is needed.
I urge all residents of Cotmanhay and Ilkeston to go to DCC’s website and make your views known supporting me in keeping Hazelwood open.
I hope that Maggie Throup will be true to her word and will not stand for the closure of Hazelwood. I urge her to put pressure on the Tory led County Council and Central Government and the Chancellor, to spend the money that is desperately needed to refurbish Hazelwood and keep it open for the sake of its residents”
Councillor Jane Wilson – Labour Ward Councillor for Cotmanhay, EBC Said:
“Losing this resource is not only a great loss to Cotmanhay but to the local community of Ilkeston, and I am concerned for the residents and carers who face great uncertainty.”
