IMPORTANT NOTICE TO ALL ANGLERS!

Koi Herpesvirus (KHV)

Recently suspected and confirmed KHV outbreaks were reported across several UK fisheries, including sites in West Yorkshire.

Some fisheries have lost hundreds of fish.

This means we must all act now to prevent further spread. 🚨 🦠

Why dipping and drying your equipment matters!

* Research by Cefas confirms that KHV can remain on nets, slings, mats, and retainers under damp, dark storage and still infect carp at another fishery.

* In contrast, nets stored in sunlight (UV exposure) are shown to inactivate the virus completely whether wet or dry.

What YOU need to do:

1. Dip your landing nets, slings, cradles, mats, waders, boots etc. ideally for at least 30 seconds in the dip tanks where provided, before entering or leaving the water.

2. Leave all equipment to fully dry in sunlight drying alone can reduce infectivity by ~80%, but sunlight inactivates the virus entirely

3. Don’t store wet gear in sealed plastic bags. Damp, dark conditions can harbour live virus for at least 18 hours.

What to watch for in the fish:

* Signs often appear when water temperatures are between 16 °C and 28 °C (the peak activity range for KHV)

* Be alert for: necrotic gills, sunken eyes, excess mucus, rough or pale skin. These are common clinical signs.

If you suspect KHV:

* Report immediately to one of the bailiffs or fishery management.

Amend Schedule 2.1 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 to list cormorants, goosanders and red-breasted mergansers that they may be managed, enabling proportionate control to protect inland fisheries and migratory fish populations where serious damage is evidenced.

The first day at the Great Yorkshire Show was a cracking day. Flies were tied, tackle sold, kids investiged invertebrates,. All in all a great day.
