ALBA Party Organisational Update
Date: Sunday, 22nd February 2026
Issued by: Highlands and Islands Local Authority Campaign Unit (LACU)
Organisation: Alba Party – Highlands and Islands
1. Purpose of this Report
This report is issued to update members of Alba Party Highlands and Islands following the Party-wide email circulated yesterday. It aims to provide context, clarity, and reassurance regarding the current financial and organisational challenges facing the Party.
2. Background
As previously communicated, the Party has been dealing with ongoing and serious issues arising from the actions of a former member. These issues include:
• The alleged misappropriation of Party funds
• A failure of accountability
• Actions that materially hindered the Party’s capacity to progress and stand candidates for both the upcoming and future Scottish Parliamentary elections
3. Impact on the Party
The consequences of these actions have placed the Party in a precarious financial and organisational position. The knock-on effects have been significant and far-reaching, impacting:
• The wellbeing and workload of our late Party leader
• Established internal mechanisms and governance processes
• The Party’s relationship with the Electoral Commission, exacerbated by delayed responses
• An ongoing police investigation, which continues to restrict the Party’s ability to fully resolve matters at pace
4. Public Statement
This afternoon, Kenny MacAskill confirmed to The National:
“No final decision has been taken at this stage. Elected representatives, candidates and members have been advised of the Party’s serious financial position, arising from what is believed to be a fraud committed against the Party. The NEC and candidates have been informed that all options remain under consideration while the Party continues to engage with the Electoral Commission.”
This statement reflects the current position accurately and underscores the seriousness with which the Party is addressing these matters.
5. Next Steps and Assurance to Members
The Highlands and Islands LACU asks for members’ continued support and patience while these processes are diligently pursued. We recognise the uncertainty this situation creates and assure members that:
• Every available and appropriate channel is being fully explored
• The interests of our candidates, LACU, and wider Party membership remain central to all decisions
• Engagement with relevant authorities will continue until matters are properly concluded
6. Conclusion
Despite the challenges faced, the Highlands and Islands LACU remains committed, transparent, and resolute in working towards stability and accountability. We thank members for their understanding and solidarity during this difficult period.
