Our waste strategy is in place to help Aberdeenshire maximise the environmental, community, and financial benefits from the waste it produces. The more waste that is recycled or reused, the better—better for the environment and better for offsetting the more expensive cost of incineration. Users who interact with Aberdeens

🥗 By using your weekly food recycling service, you're helping to turn your leftovers into nutrient-rich fertiliser or compost for the next generation of crops.

Simple changes at home make a real difference because recycling creates jobs, boosts the economy, conserves natural resources, and helps to protect public money.

🥗 Need a food caddy? You can pick up a free indoor or outdoor caddy from your local recycling centre.

♻️ Need liners? Grab them from household recycling centres, council libraries, or simply tie one to your outdoor caddy and the collection crew will leave you a new roll (where stock is available).

📣 We have had to cancel our Ballater and Aboyne seasonal garden waste points for tomorrow (Saturday 29 August). We thank you for your patience during this time of reduced staffing.

👍 Always check the website before visiting a seasonal garden waste point in case there are any cancellations due to an event taking place on location.

📌 You will find them at locations throughout Aberdeenshire: Aboyne, Ballater, Balmedie, Blackburn, Inverbervie, Kemnay, Kintore, Mintlaw, Newmachar, Newtonhill, Oldmeldrum, and St Cyrus.

🦗 Our seasonal garden waste recycling points take place every Saturday up to and including 31 October 2026.

Garden waste will be recycled in a sustainable open-windrow process that produces a high-quality compost for the agricultural and horticultural industry.

We ask that all visitors to our household recycling centres check the website prior to travelling in case of a change in opening times, a need to book, a closure, to see what items are accepted, and the type of vehicles that are welcomed. When visiting, please arrive early enough to unload the vehicle before the lunchtime or end-of-day close.

We've a handy A-Z waste guide to show how and where to correctly—and safely—recycle or dispose of common items, such as... ⚡Electricals!

Importantly, if you are recycling electricals, remember to remove any batteries and recycle those separately. They are a major cause of fires when improperly disposed of. 🔥

If in a suitable condition and with all parts and plugs, electricals can be donated to a charity directly or via a reuse container at Banchory, Ellon, Laurencekirk, Macduff, Stonehaven, Portlethen, or Peterhead household recycling centres.

If not, place electricals for recycling in the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) container at a recycling centre. WEEE containers are also available at Port Elphinstone’s Davidson Park and at Insch’s leisure centre car park.

Household batteries can be recycled separately from other electrical waste at all household recycling centres. Household batteries can also be recycled as part of a home’s weekly kerbside collections using freely available pink battery bags. Simply leave a full and sealed battery bag on top of your kerbside bin being collected on any given week.

🚶‍♂️ A reminder that pedestrian access to our household recycling centres in Fraserburgh, Huntly, Insch, Laurencekirk, Portsoy, and Turriff is switching to locally agreed and arranged visits only from Monday 31 August 2026.

✅ To allow pedestrian access to support those it is intended for, genuine walk-in customers who do not have access to a vehicle for Fraserburgh, Huntly, Insch, Laurencekirk, Portsoy, and Turriff can make arrangements by speaking to a member of staff on site at their local household recycling centre.

As we have very few genuine walk in customers, our staff have already had on-site converstations with regular users of this service.

These changes allow these household recycling centres to continue to safely support residents who do not have access to a vehicle while remaining vigilant against rogue businesses who attempt to use the sites at the expense of residents. At the same time, car owners benefit from extended access to these sites across their opening hours. 🚗

Depending on their size, used batteries can go...
👍 To local recycling points (many supermarkets have drop-off bins)
👍 To household recycling centres, which accept larger batteries in the WEEE containers
👍 In the freely available pink household battery bags that can be filled and placed on top of kerbside wheelie bins for collection

Batteries contain valuable materials like lead, nickel, zinc, and cobalt which can be recycled again and again. Recycle them and they’ll appear in new products, including more batteries and materials for the steel industry. Throw them away, and they're gone for good.

Household battery bags are available for free from local household recycling centres, libraries, or service points. An empty battery bag can also be tied to a household’s kerbside bin and the collection crew will leave a new roll where stock is available.

Please, do not put anything with a battery in the bin, not just because they contain valuable recyclable material, but because they—when pierced or crushed—can easily cause fires at great expense to the local community and our environment.

Our teams tag bins to help keep collections running smoothly and ensure as much as possible is recycled. Here is a quick guide to why you might receive one:

🗑️ To suggest additional recycling: You may be eligible for an extra recycling bin if you regularly have more material than your current bin can hold. Great job!

🗑️ To address excess/side waste: We generally do not collect waste or recycling left beside your bin. A tag lets you know that these items should be placed inside your bin for the next scheduled collection.

🗑️ To provide guidance: Tags help clarify what can and cannot be placed in your recycling bins to reduce contamination.

📣 Important Note on General Waste:
If you are using an unauthorised second general waste (black-lid) bin, it will not be emptied and will be tagged to explain why.

🚗 Aberdeenshire residents who are unable to dispose of tyres via their garage can use our tyre disposal service at the following waste transfer stations:

💳 This is a chargeable service, payable by chip and pin at the time of drop-off. You can learn more about prices and how to book your disposal slot via our website.

📣 Always check with the garage or company you're dealing with first to see if they can dispose of your old tyres.
