A new consultation has been launched to review Approved Document B: Fire Safety.

Many of the suggested amendments to Approved Document B are to consolidate, update and clarify the existing guidance however there are also new thresholds, recommendations, new terminology and the introduction of new guidance to consider with this review.

You can read the proposals and share your thoughts on the Health and Safety website: https://consultations.hse.gov.uk/bsr/review-of-approved-document-b-fire-safety/

The government is seeking views on the creation of a single regulator to oversee the construction industry. Plans for a new regulator will bring together standards across buildings, products and professionals in the construction sector and reduce fragmentation in the way the built environment is regulated.

A prospectus has been published online outlining their proposals and we’d encourage all our followers to read through the proposals and respond to the consultation. You have until 20 March 2026 to share your views.

We had a lovely evening at the Grand Finals of the LABC Building Excellence Awards. Unfortunately, it wasn’t our night, and we didn’t win in our categories. However, we’re so proud of every single one of our nominees, all deserving in their own right.

Thank you to everyone that contributed to a nomination last year. Representing Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils on a national stage will always be something we’re honoured to have the opportunity to do.

A huge congratulations to all the winners on the night 👏👏

Our final finalist is the one and only, Mark Cross. An inspector that has legendary status after a career spanning almost 50 years.

Nominated for Local Authority Building Control Surveyor of the Year, he is a respected and valued member of the building community. He has been integral to training the next generation of inspectors and offering his support throughout their study, charterships and competency. He is a joy to work with and revered by many more.

His dedication to the profession, and his support of our up-and-coming inspectors is why we felt he deserved to be nominated for this award. We’re wishing him the best of luck tonight.

If you have any fond memories of working with Mark, please share them below!

Set in the heart of Waveney Valley, Angles House is our third finalist at the .

This beautiful home is a wonderful example of a design that complements its surroundings. The dwelling interacts with the natural landscape and lightly sits in the plot, ensuring it does not impose on the view. The design was based on the idea of an Anglo-Saxon settlement. Four wood clad huts are linked by glass to create one home.

Superb thermal performance along with innovative materials ensure no compromises were made in the home. Considerate design removes the potential for overheating with faceted orientations and an overhanging roof which means the owners can enjoy the uninterrupted views of the valley throughout the seasons.

Good luck to the project team, this Friday, vying for Best Individual New Home.

Our next regional winner and finalist at the LABC Building Excellence Awards is Franklyn Nevard.

Shortlisted for Best Residential and Small Commercial Designer, Franklyn has been working as an architect for over 43 years. He partnered with our service 6 years ago and he was recommended for this award by his inspector, Mark Polley. Having checked numerous plans over the years, Franklyn’s deposits are consistent, accurate, thorough and detailed. Which is everything we hope for when plan checking!

Good luck to Franklyn this Friday as he goes up against other designers from across the country.

It’s that time of year again, the LABC Building Excellence Awards are on the horizon.

Today, we're shining the light on Siskin Lodge and Nightjar Barn regional winner and national finalist of Best Non-residential Extension, Alteration or Conversion. The renovated barns have been split into two plots and are used as holiday lets based in a beautiful, rural setting.

The dilapidated barns were set within the curtilage of a Grade II listed building which brought its own mix of complications however the build changed course when the contractors, unfortunately, went into liquidation. Overcoming many issues throughout the build the scheme has proved to be a very popular and guests have praised the finish and quality of the accommodation.

We look forward to seeing how this project gets on at the national finals in just under two weeks. Join us in wishing the project team good luck!
