Suffolk Trading Standards

Suffolk Trading Standards We provide consumer advice through a regional Trading Standards helpline Citizens Advice consumer service on 0808 223 1133.

Historically, we were known as Suffolk Weights and Measures Department because our primary function was to maintain the integrity of commercial weighing and measuring by routine testing of equipment and goods. We now deal with more diverse issues under a wide variety of Acts, Orders and Codes of Practice, as set out by central government, the Food Standards Agency and the Office of Fair Trading. W

e advise on and enforce laws that govern the way we buy, sell, rent and hire goods and services. These laws cover a wide area, which includes:

- product labelling
- product safety
- food labelling
- weights and measures
- under-age sales
- animal welfare

Our duties include:

- visiting local traders for routine checks or to investigate complaints
- taking samples of goods for testing
- checking that weighing scales and measures are accurate
- checking that food labelling is correct and advertising is not misleading
- advising consumers and businesses about the law
- investigating suspected offences, which could include undercover or surveillance work
- preparing evidence and prosecuting cases in court

Could scanning a QR code lead to being scammed? ⚠️

Not always, but scammers are using QR codes in places you would usually trust to lead you to fake websites or apps.

Here's a few questions to ask yourself to stay protected against QR code scams ⤵️

- Who is it from? If the QR code is in a letter or email, is it something you were expecting to receive?

- If it's a public space like a car park, is it actually a sticker covering up something else?

- When you scan it, does the web address match the business you were expecting to see? And does it have a secure connection?

If you think you've been scammed, then take a look at our advice on what to do next through the link in the comments.

📞 It might look like a call from your bank, HMRC or another trusted organisation. But appearances can be deceiving.

Scammers can fake the number that appears on your screen, making a call look legitimate when it's actually from a criminal. This is known as number spoofing.

If you receive an unexpected call asking for personal details, passwords or money:
✅ Hang up
✅ Find the organisation's number on its official website
✅ Call them back directly

Most spoofed calls are blocked, but it's still important to know the warning signs.

🚨 Did you know the UK Government is introducing a Va**ng Products Duty, alongside a Va**ng Duty Stamp Scheme from 1 October 2026?

The UK Government is introducing a Va**ng Products Duty (VPD) at a flat rate of £2.20 per 10 ml of va**ng liquid, alongside a Va**ng Duty Stamp (VDS) scheme requiring stamps to be affixed to va**ng products.

Businesses that manufacture, import or store va**ng products in the UK must apply for approval for the VPD and VDS schemes, ahead of them coming into force on 1 October 2026.
