Suffolk Trading Standards We provide consumer advice through a regional Trading Standards helpline Citizens Advice consumer service on 0808 223 1133.

Historically, we were known as Suffolk Weights and Measures Department because our primary function was to maintain the integrity of commercial weighing and measuring by routine testing of equipment and goods. We now deal with more diverse issues under a wide variety of Acts, Orders and Codes of Practice, as set out by central government, the Food Standards Agency and the Office of Fair Trading. W

e advise on and enforce laws that govern the way we buy, sell, rent and hire goods and services. These laws cover a wide area, which includes:

- product labelling
- product safety
- food labelling
- weights and measures
- under-age sales
- animal welfare

Our duties include:

- visiting local traders for routine checks or to investigate complaints
- taking samples of goods for testing
- checking that weighing scales and measures are accurate
- checking that food labelling is correct and advertising is not misleading
- advising consumers and businesses about the law
- investigating suspected offences, which could include undercover or surveillance work
- preparing evidence and prosecuting cases in court

Did you buy a washing machine, dishwasher, or other large appliance from Marks Electrical between April and November 2025?

If you did – and paid for unwrapping or the recycling of your old appliance – then then you could get some money back. You don’t need to do anything, you’ll be repaid automatically.

The Competition and Markets Authority have ordered the company to refund nearly 40,000 customers after it automatically opted them into extra charges that they didn’t expressly agree to.

Make sure you keep a copy of the advert which proves what it said and how the vehicle was described in case there’s a problem later.

✔️ Our top tip is to do a reverse image search of the car in the advert to see if the picture has been used before.

Today we launched Suffolk Against Fraud. 🛡️
Suffolk Trading Standards and Suffolk Constabulary Official Page have joined forces with businesses and community interest groups from across the county to unite in the fight against fraud.

The launch brought together Suffolk businesses, local community groups, charities and local authority representatives who will support residents and businesses in Suffolk to help protect them from fraud.

As well as bringing together investigative resource, expertise and intelligence to tackle and combat fraud, Suffolk Against Fraud will see joined up campaigns and media messaging and improved quality of victim support.

Fraud poses a significant threat to the people, prosperity, and security of the residents of Suffolk. It is by far the most common crime and now accounts for over 40% of all offences in the County. Being scammed or targeted by fraud can have a devastating impact on vulnerable people in Suffolk. It can also destroy small businesses.

Together we will strengthen our response to fraud, crack down on these criminals and better safeguard our communities.

🚨 Doorstep trader alert!
Residents in Old Newton have been approached at the door today by a trader stating that they could see that there was a problem with the roof of the property.

Have you been approached? Do you have any details of the traders and the vehicle they are travelling in? Call us via Citizens Advice Consumer Service on 0808 223 1133.

‼️ Please share! They may still be in the area, or they could have moved on elsewhere in the County.

Our normal advice is to never agree to anything, including a home visit, when approached by a cold caller on the phone, at your door or via email. Do your research first, and find out if it is a product or service that you want or require.

While it might be tempting to agree to low prices being offered on the doorstep, think twice.
▪️ never agree to have any work done as a result of a cold call, and don't be pressurised into having the job done immediately
▪️ if you think work needs doing to your home, get quotes from 2 or 3 traders. Ask friends and family for recommendations of traders who have carried out work for them. You can also check Suffolk Trusted Trader for traders that have been vetted and approved by us (link in the comments ⤵️ )
▪️ ask for the full name & address from a trader before considering dealing with them, and never rely solely on a mobile phone number
▪️ ask for a written quotation detailing all the proposed work and a final price for the job BEFORE the work is started
▪️ only pay in full once the work is completed to your satisfaction and PLEASE don't pay cash
