North Ayrshire Council joins communities and its partners to pledge its support for Menstrual Hygiene Day 2026.

Celebrated on Thursday 28 May, the annual awareness day is recognised globally as an opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of menstrual hygiene and break the silence and stigma surrounding menstruation.

The date of the global awareness raising campaign has been intentionally selected because on average, periods last for five days – represented by May being the fifth month of the year – and cycles tend to last 28 days.

Each year, a specific theme is chosen for World Menstrual Hygiene Day to focus on different aspects surrounding menstrual hygiene management. The theme of Menstrual Hygiene Day 2026 is: Together for a .

To achieve a , our dedicated Period Dignity team remain at the forefront of championing the Council’s Wellbeing priority including providing support for North Ayrshire’s six localities to break the stigma and taboos surrounding menstruation.

If you are visiting community centres or libraries in North Ayrshire this week, look out for the Period Dignity Wellness Corners, which offer up to date information and educational materials to help residents manage menstruation with dignity.

📣 NOMINATIONS ARE OPEN! ✔️

The Scottish Youth Parliament (SYP) election process is now underway for North Ayrshire!

SYP are the democratically elected voice of Scotland’s young people 🗣️

Young people from all backgrounds across Scotland are being encouraged to stand as candidates in the next Scottish Youth Parliament (SYP) elections to campaign for change in their local area and beyond.

Applications to become Members of the Scottish Youth Parliament (MSYPs) are now open for young people aged 14–25 who work, study, or live in North Ayrshire in the Cunninghame North and Cunninghame South constituencies, with voting set to take place in November this year.

Young people interested in standing for election to SYP can find out more and register online at elections.syp.org.uk/

➡️ Prospective candidates are being urged to register their interest now if they want to take part in the November 2026 election to join SYP’s next membership.

➡️ Over the summer, candidates will have lots of opportunities to develop skills, create their election campaign plans, and meet young people from across Scotland.

➡️ Across North Ayrshire, representing both the Cunninghame North and Cunninghame South Constituencies, MSYPs have been key figures in advocating for the issues that matter most to young people in areas such as mental health, public transport, the environment and education 🙌

Ellie Craig, Chair of SYP and MSYP for Glasgow Cathcart, said: “We’re delighted to be joining forces with North Ayrshire Council to make sure eligible young people in the community have the chance to be part of an organisation that’s been championing children and young people’s rights for over two decades.

“Being an MSYP is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to help young people have their voices heard in a society that is dominated by adults. It’s also a very practical way to develop new skills and gain experience while meeting other young people from across the country… who will likely become your friends!”

Since 1999, SYP has successfully campaigned for change for Scotland’s children and young people. This includes free bus travel for under-22s; protecting young people’s rights by campaigning to bring the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child into Scots law; and calling for 16- and 17-year-olds to be able to vote in all Scottish elections.

Those registering to stand for election as a Member of Scottish Youth Parliament will need to be between age 14 and 25 on 15 November 2026, and must live, work or study in North Ayrshire.

Stay tuned for updates and help us to spread the word to young people you know!

📍 SYP is grounded in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, particularly Article 12, which lays out young people’s right to be listened to on the issues that affect them, and for their views to be heard.
