Plymouth WWII Ordinance Incident This month,

A big thank you to the community after a 250kg World War Two bomb was safely dealt with earlier today.

Our crews also played an important role in supporting emergency services during the recent unexploded bomb incident in Plymouth. Firefighters assisted with helping evacuate residents within the safety cordon. Incidents like this highlight the wide-ranging role of our service, working alongside partner agencies to protect the public during complex and potentially high-risk situations.

Incidents like these also highlight the time and effort our crews and many other crews/partner agencies continue to put in to supporting our communities. Your reliability and commitment, is always appreciated.

Congratulations to Martin Brittin, one of Ivybridge’s On Call Firefighters who was awarded his Fire & Rescue Service Long Service and Good Conduct medal today.

Martin joined Ivybridge when he was 18 years old, and completed a number of years within the local authority Service before joining the aviation firefighting industry.

We were privileged to see him make an application to work with us again last year and have him back on our local firefighting team in Ivybridge in between his shifts at Newquay Airport as a Crew Manager.

Well done and Congratulations!

lvybridge crew were kept busy throughout the day yesterday, attending a property fire in Bigbury, working alongside our colleagues to bring the incident to a safe conclusion. After returning to the station and continuing with our drill night, just as we were preparing to head home, we were mobilised again.

This time to a road traffic collision (RTC) on the A38. We responded alongside crews from Crownhill and Yelverton Fire Station. Yelverton, who had been at the Bigbury incident as a relief crew were on their way back to their home station and were identified as the next nearest available resource alongside ourselves at Ivybridge and Crownhill.

This is a great example of how our Fire Control room uses live tracking to monitor appliance locations in real time, ensuring the closest and most appropriate resources are mobilised, instead of relying solely on station proximity. This means we can get help to those who need it, faster and more efficiently.

A long and demanding day, but one that highlights the dedication of crews and the effectiveness of a coordinated response across the service.

Our Welfare Pod from Ivybridge Fire Station (V53N4) was in attendance at the recent derelict hotel fire in Torquay, providing vital support to crews working in challenging conditions.

Incidents like these can be physically and mentally demanding, often requiring firefighters to operate for extended periods in hazardous environments. The Welfare Pod plays a key role in keeping crews safe and effective by offering refreshments, hydration, rest facilities, and a place to regroup away from the incident ground.

By supporting firefighter welfare, the pod helps maintain operational performance, reduces fatigue, and ensures crews can continue to work safely and efficiently throughout the duration of an incident.

Here is a video of our pod arriving on scene in Torquay 5/4/26

📟New Incident🚨

Today we were mobilised to assist our colleagues from the ambulance service. The incident was located at longtimber woods in Ivybridge so we used our co responder vehicle to gain better access closer to the incident, where there was a casualty with a broken leg.
Crews utilized a specialist stretcher in aid of carrying the casualty to the ambulance.

It was especially easy to locate the incident today due to a member of the public using What3Words and relaying this to our control room.

The app is free to use and assists all emergency services in locating incidents enabling a faster more effective response.

We carried out a guard of honour for Ray and his family this month, leading his funeral procession through the main street of Ivybridge and raising our axes for him. This was both an honour and a privilege.

Congratulations to FF Dan Golder!

Over the last few months Dan has been working hard at obtaining the core skills it takes to be a firefighter. First he attended a 14 days initial recruits course where he learnt how to operate the pump, put up ladders, use safe working at height equipment and how to safely extricate casualties from a Road Traffic Collision (RTC).

He then went on to spend 10 days at our Breathing Apparatus school where he learnt how to employ search and rescue techniques and how to firefight within a compartment.

After successfully completing this course he is now "on the run"! 🔥

We are proud of Dan and look forward to seeing him take on his firefighter development period where he will practice all of the above skills and more, even further! 🚒

Tonight we utilised our Service Training Centre at Plympton to run drills with our colleagues from Princetown Fire Station.

We both carry different types of equipment on our fire engines but are required to know how to operate it all, so training together gives us a good opportunity to keep up to speed.

The Ivybridge crews also tested the inflatable structure that lives on our Welfare Pod, which can be used as a shelter for commanders to conduct briefings or for crews as a rest area in bad weather.

🚒Ivybridge Fire Station this month.🚑

So far this month we have had...

➡️ 10 mobilisations in our fire appliance
➡️ 9 mobilisations responding on behalf of SWAST to Category 1 medical emergencies

Our calls have included:

🔨🚪 Gaining entry to properties to assist SWAST crews
🚗 Extricating casualties involved in RTCs
🚒 Incident-related standbys at neighbouring stations to maintain cover
🚨Automatic fire alarm activations

🚑 On the co-responding side we’ve attended emergencies such as breathing difficulties, seizures, and other Category 1 medical incidents

Alongside our operational work, we also carried out a specialist drill night this month. The scenario simulated an RTC involving a trapped casualty and a chemical leak within the vehicle. This exercise utilised:
-Our RTC equipment
- Breathing Apparatus
-Our Environmental Protection Pack
- Correct decontamination procedures for this type of incident.

Training like this is invaluable although it takes a lot to organize. It proved its worth the very next morning when we were mobilised to an RTC on the A38, involving a vehicle on its roof with the occupant trapped inside.

Thank you for your continued support. Stay safe.
