Our Themes for 25/26...
Black and White (25th/Sept - 30th/Oct)
Black and white photography focuses on tone, contrast, light, and form—without the influence of colour. It encourages careful attention to composition, lighting, and subject matter to create mood, drama, or clarity.
Key elements to consider:
Images must be, containing only shades of grey from black to white (no selective colour).
Any subject is allowed, but it should benefit from or be enhanced by the black and white treatment—not just converted from colour.
Emphasising Strong use of light, shadow, texture, shape, or emotion is encouraged.
Both traditional and modern approaches are welcome, from classic styles to bold, high-contrast edits. For example, you may wish to show a full range of tones from deep blacks to delicate highlights, or high key (mainly dark tones), low key (mainly light) images, or even the subtleties possible by restricting tones.
Macro Theme (6th/Nov - 4th/Dec)
"This theme is all about the details or every days items from a different view point.
Using a Macro lens, Macro tubes, magnifying filters or any lens at minimum focusing distance and cropping. Take us into a world of magnification and close up details."
Urban Portraiture (12th/Feb - 5th/March)
Urban portraiture combines portrait photography with elements of a town or city environment. It captures a person within an urban setting, using streets, buildings, graffiti, signage, structures, or textures to enhance the mood, context, or story of the portrait.
Key elements to consider:
The subject (person) must be the main focus of the image.
The urban environment should play a clear supporting role—either visually, narratively, or thematically.
The location can be indoors or outdoors, as long as it’s recognisably urban (e.g., cafes, subways, rooftops, alleyways, stairwells).
The image can be candid or posed
This theme encourages creative use of contrast, light, space, and interaction between the subject and the urban landscape.
Urban (12th/Mar - 7th/May)
Urban photography is defined as the focus on objects and features in urban environments such as architecture, serving as a documentation of urban spaces. These spaces are built up areas, such as towns and cities. Images should capture the essence of an urban area.
