1127 Kendal Squadron, Air Training Corps

This weekend Kendal Squadron has hosted a Blue & Bronze Road Marching weekend for cadets from Sector 1 & 2 (North & South Cumbria).

Kendal's WO Howarth & FS Whelan from 1030 Whitehaven Squadron, Air Training Corps put the cadets through their paces across the two days.

The blue group completed a theory session followed by a 12km and 15km march. The bronze group completed 2, 20km marches.

Well done to the 9 cadets from 1127 Kendal Squadron, Air Training Corps, 1 cadet from 1264 Windermere Air Cadets and 1 cadet from 2192 Appleby Grammar School Sqn ATC who completed their Blue Road Marching badges.

Well done also to CWO Bonnefin & Cpl Bonnefin for completing the first half of their Bronze Road Marching badge. They still have a 2x20km march to complete before they can be awarded their badges.

A massive thankyou to Sgt Breakell and CI Breakell for being support staff for the event.

Congratulations to CWO Bonnefin who has been away on camp at Inskip Cadet Centre taking part in the North Region Gold Space camp. He is now one of the first 3 cadets in the Wing to wear the gold badge.

This evening cadets continued their blue fieldcraft lessons by learning how to cook and eat in the field.

The cadets all had a taste of the rations packs and there was an overwhelming consensus that they taste better than they look.

Meet the team Monday – Warrant Officer Amber Howarth

What have you done in your time at 1127 Kendal Squadron and the Royal Air Force Air Cadets (RAFAC)?

I started as a cadet at 1264 (Windermere) Sqn back in 2002. Being a cadet was the best thing ever and after taking every opportunity I could I aged out at 20 as a CWO in 2008. During my time as a cadet I went on several overseas camps, UK summer camps to RAF stations, adventure training camps at Windermere & Llanbedr as well as doing my weapons instructors and shooting coach qualifications, Duke of Edinburgh award, Cosford 2 day Road Marches and every day trip, weekend camp and activity I could get my hands on.

From there I went straight in to being an adult Sgt at 1264. In 2012 I moved to 1127 (Kendal) Sqn and I have been here ever since working my way up to being a WO.

What made you join RAFAC?

I used to live near to the National Air Cadet Adventure Training Centre (NACATC) in Windermere and knowing nothing about the Air Cadets or the RAF I used to see the cadets going off for the day to do adventure training whilst I was heading off to school. Having a love of all thing outdoors and adventure I wanted to be part of it so I joined and haven't looked back since.

Best moment during your time at the Sqn?
I have far too many amazing memories from my time in cadets to list here however one of my standout moments was when I trained the Squadron drill team for Wing Training Day and after months of hard work the team won and were crowned the best drill team in Cumbria & Lancashire Wing and then went on to represent the Wing at North Region. This was a massive achievement for a smaller Squadron as every cadet on the unit was involved and to achieve our shared goal was a truly special moment.

Another favourite moment at 1127 was crossing the finish line of the Nijmegen marches in The Netherlands alongside 3 Kendal cadets and others from the Wing.

I was very fortunate as a cadet to experience a lot of different camps and activities, several of which were overseas. I have been to RAF Akrotiri on tour with the National Air Cadet Concert Band, summer camp at USAF Ramstein which is the largest American community outside of the USA for an incredible week with the US Air Force, sailing the Sea Cadet's tall ship TS Royalist over to France and also completing my Gold Duke of Edinburgh expedition in Bavaria, Germany.

Specialist skills and role on Sqn?

Throughout my time in the cadets, I have held many qualifications from shooting to mountain biking and road marching to radio and many more. As a WO my role on Sqn is to support the cadets with drill, dress and discipline and I very much enjoy teaching drill and banner drill. My main qualifications at the moment are Road Marching, Bronze Radio & Cyber.

On Wednesday 5 cadets from Kendal and 2 from Windermere Air Cadets attended RAF Topcliffe in North Yorkshire for a days gliding in the Viking T1 with 645 Volunteer Gliding School.

On Sunday 5 Cadets and 3 CFAV attended the annual Civic Celebration for Mayor's Sunday. After a service at Kendal Parish Church there was a parade through the town.
