British Simmental Cattle Society We are the British Simmental Cattle Society

British Simmental cattle, whose origins go back several hundred years to the Simmen valley in Switzerland, were first introduced into the UK in 1970. Since then the breed has grown to be the 4th largest beef breed in the UK and leads the way on the promotion of health in beef breeding cattle. Simmental cattle are probably the most genuine “dual” purpose breed that can be crossed successfully with

any other breed and produce cows which are extremely milky, fertile, docile and with great natural mothering instincts. The breed also possesses tremendous terminal genetics, with excellent growth rates and daily live weight gains of in excess of 2kg/day achievable in an intensive beef finishing system (varied results between heifers, steers and bulls). With farmers seeking to run lower input systems and find ways of reducing costs, Simmental cattle are further increasing in popularity due to their ability to rear a calf on milk and not on concentrates. Coupled with high growth rates and carbon efficiencies, the breed offers a competitive edge and increased profitability in the present climate.

“Functional, fertile cattle, structurally sound for longevity, and with good temperament will never go out of style”

The ninth Working Genes Bull Sale, hosted by the McGowan family, Incheoch Farms, Aylth, Blairgowrie, takes place one week today on 8th September.

See the catalogue here and with all the details of the bulls and the sale. You can attend on the day and see the bulls but the sale is on-line, silent auction by Yourbid. There’s also a further viewing day, 3rd September 3pm-8pm.

Here’s a quote from the McGowans on their Simmental bull breeding philosophy:

“Robust bulls, bred from Functional, Efficient cows has been our goal for many years now. We run just over 200 pedigree, performance recorded cows, and select hard for fertility, structural soundness, good temperaments and easy calving. We find that easy-fleshed, medium framed cattle with a bit of maternal character tend to be the ones who tick the boxes—and we think the bulls we have on offer today can transfer these traits to your herd.”

Also with this video post, see some of the bulls for sale and with Neil McGowan giving you some breeding background.

♦️⭐️WROXALL SIMMENTALS – BREEDING TOMORROW’S CATTLE TODAY⭐️♦️

🎯Our series of breeders advertisements sees us turn too the noted and longstanding Wroxall Pedigree herd of Rob, Sam & Josh Evans, Kington Grange Farm, Claverdon, Warwickshire.

💪Featured in the advert is the homozygous polled herd sire Coose Pat (PP).

💥What does the breeder say about the Simmental breed: “Simmental is the dual-purpose breed that ticks all the boxes. After more than half a century of breeding experience, we know that the Simmental cow has both the frame and the ability to naturally breed and rear a strong calf, she will produce an abundance of milk off fairly ordinary forage, her calf will grow to half her bodyweight – 400kg or more at weaning without any supplementary feed, and then go on to finish off a good forage diet with little or no hard feed cost.”

🟠⚡️SPRING CALVING SIMMENTAL COWS FROM THE BREAGHEY HERD LOOKING TOP NOTCH!⚡️🟠

🌍We’re ‘on tour’ at the moment around the UK and just bringing you what we think are video clips of some typical but high-quality Simmental cows and calves from different herds.

👉Tonight we’re jumping across the water and featuring the Breaghey pedigree herd of Andrew and Zara Clarke in County Armagh, Northen Ireland.👈

🎯Front and centre are the Breaghey Simmental cows enjoying some lush grass after a few days of rain.

💥This batch of spring calving cows are running with the herd’s homebred junior stock bull Breaghey Super Mario (shown in the video). This young bull is by Kilbride Farm Marvel and is out of Breachey Vida M427, an Omorga Isaac daughter. Super Mario is in the breed’s top 1% for both Terminal Production, and Self Replacing Indexes.💥

💯We can see it here again in this top video but Simmental females, both pedigree and commercially, bring you oceans of milk, calving ease, docility, fertility and longevity, and crossed with any breed of sire produce fast growing, easy fleshing progeny with tremendous weaning weights. There’s more to Simmental!

👏Thank you to Breaghey Simmentals, and keep an eye on Facebook to see the next herd up of Simmental cows and calves to be profiled.👏

🟥👌YOUNG SIMMENTAL COWS AND CALVES AT THE GOLDIES, NEWBIEMAINS!👌🟥

🙂Just moving round the country and we like to give you little tasters of pedigree Simmental herds with these snapshot videos.

⭐️Tonight’s video is from the noted 150 cow Newbiemains herd of Jim & Patricia Goldie, Newbiemains Farm, Annan, Dumfriesshire in the South West of Scotland.

🎯Featuring some young breeding females, most of the cows shown are 24-28 months old, and with their June and July born calves.

❗️The calves are sired by predominantly by Grangewood Paddington, Hiltonstown Lorenzo, and Auchorachan Picasso.

👇Established some 20 years ago, here’s a comment from Jim Goldie last year as he reflected on the development of the Newbiemains herd and the changes within the breed as a whole over two decades:

💥“It was the dual-purpose aspect that really attracted us to the breed in the first place, and we definitely felt that the breed hadn’t yet reached its full potential. We knew they could produce a good, milky female, and we saw it as a challenge to try and breed more shapely bulls, while maintaining that milkiness. The breed has improved a lot, especially in the last 10 years; the bulls have more shape and better weight gain.”

❤️We love these ‘from the field’ videos and keep an eye on Simmental Facebook as we continue to profile herds and give you a little look at what’s going on in herds around the UK. There's more to Simmental!

🔴💥EARLY PREVIEW: VIDEO ‘SNAP SHOT’ OF PITGAVENY SIMMENTAL COWS & CALVES!💥🔴

‼️👌Herd visit to Pitgaveny Farm, Elgin on Saturday 26th September

✅Just a follow on from yesterday’s announcement we thought we would whet your appetite for the herd visit to the highly noted commercial and pedigree Pitgaveny Simmental herd at Pitgaveny Farms, Elgin, Morayshire on Saturday 26th September.

👍The day is very much OPEN TO EVERYONE who would like to see this high end commercial and pedigree herd!

🎯So here’s a little taster video, taken today, of a mix of commercial and pedigree cows with their mainly April born calves at foot. Run as one herd the pedigree cows don’t get any ‘special treatment’ unless they’re being shown.

💥As you can see some tremendous cows, full of milk, making a great job of their calves, and all super quiet with fantastic temperaments.

📌On the 26th September, visitors will meet at 1pm, with a tour of the herd from 1.30pm. There will also be a stockjudging competition.

🔹From 4pm all visitors will regroup at the farm for presentations and refreshments. refreshments.

🐂Pitgaveny Simmentals comprises of some 180-200 Simmental cows, and is owned by Mr Crinan Dunbar and managed by Geoff Anderson.

🔥Just a wee recap on herd manager Geoff Anderson’s thoughts on the Simmental breed at both Pitgaveny and in the beef industry generally: “I firmly believe the Simmental breed has a very bright future in the forward beef industry. The females are extremely fertile and milky, producing and rearing a calf each year regardless of the sire used. The calves also grow well, reaching good weights quickly and achieving slaughter readiness at an early stage — meaning they spend less time on the farm.”

🫵Traits prioritized at Pitgaveny are docility, calving ease, and carcass quality. A heavy emphasis is placed on maternal performance, maintaining a high health status, and efficient grassland utilization.

🟠So we thought we would give you an early look at just some of the Pitgaveny cows and calves and just to make sure you pencil in the 26th September for a visit. You will of course be warmly welcomed!🌞

👉Please note again, the day is open to everybody who would like to see this high end commercial and pedigree Simmental herd.
