Threlkeld Quarry and Mining Museum

Threlkeld Quarry and Mining Museum Threlkeld Quarry and Mining Museum is in the Lake District 4 miles from Keswick. A narrow gauge railway runs 1/2 mile into the Quarry.

An in depth museum on mines and quarries and lots of vintage excavators - many in working order! Threlkeld Quarry and Mining Museum is a unique attraction in the Lake District which gives visitors an insight into Lakeland's industrial past. Two indoor display rooms highlight the links between geology, quarrying and the 400 year history of metal ore mining. We have a narrow gauge (2ft) passenger ca

rrying railway which takes visitors into the quarry with views of some of the vintage excavators on the site. We run 'Sir Tom' our Bagnall 0-4-0 saddleback locomotive in school holidays and for events. At other times a diesel loco is used. Please check our website for details. Come and enjoy our fantastic views of Blencathra, whatever the weather. Why not come and try your hand at panning for minerals in the stream. The Museum is also the home of the Vintage Excavator Trust. There are demonstration weekends are held over the 3rd complete weekend of May and September. We are open 10.00 -17.00 Tuesday - Sunday and seven days a week during school holidays. Trains are diesel hauled out of school holidays and run at 11.15, 12.45, 2.15 and 3.30. During school holidays the trains are steam hauled and run on the hour from 11.00 until 4.00

Last admission is 4.00 pm

It's a glorious day here.

We've got steam trains and ice cream - what's not to like?

Our museum building is nice and cool, with lots of information on mining and quarrying.

The panning stream is flowing well - a great activity to keep the kids cool 😊

A grand spot to be with a view like this !

Due to an issue with 'Sir Tom', we'll be running one of our diesel locos over the next couple of days.

Being 100 years old things are expected to go amiss occasionally!

The timetable remains the same 11.00, 12.00, 13.15, 14.00, 15.00 and 16.00.

The museum is open as usual - a great place to visit when the weather is not at its best!
