Welcome to the Rothwell Preservation Trust. The Trust was launched at a Public Meeting in Rothwell in 1985, attended by 110 members of the public.

We are the Charity dedicated to the conservation of historic buildings in the town of Rothwell, Northamptonshire, England The proposal to formally establish the Trust received enthusiastic local support. The Trusts first three restoration projects were The Market House, Manor House and Nunnery Cottages. Later the Bungalow adjoining the Nunnery Cottages and No. 4 Market Hill were also restored by t

he Trust. Other projects are always under active consideration by the Trustees, as there remains many buildings in Rothwell which would benefit from sympathetic restoration. There is a great sense of civic pride in Rothwell. The Trustees hope that the conservation work they undertake will encourage a wider interest in improving older buildings in the Town and create an impetus for upgrading the environment of Rothwell generally, and help protect the Conservation Area.

Some exciting news as we head towards Summer!

We are pleased to announce that the Trust has been invited to develop an application to the National Lottery Heritage Fund - the UK’s largest funder for heritage projects. This is an exciting opportunity to bring major investment into Rothwell to carefully conserve and revitalise one of our Town’s most recognisable landmarks. If our Application is successful, the Trust will be expected to ‘match fund’ as part of the process and therefore fundraising activities will need to continue.

RESEARCHING THE MARKET HOUSE SHIELDS

The Rothwell Preservation Trust is working to research the history of over 90 shields around the Market House and are looking for volunteers to assist with the project👏📑🖋

Can you help? If you would like to find out more please attend the introductory meeting next Saturday 23rd May, where we will further explain the project and agree a process for research, including allocating the various Family Shields amongst the team 😀👍😊

The research launch meeting will be at 11.00am upstairs in the Market House and should last no more than 1 hour.

The Trust has arranged another of its very popular Heritage Open Days in the iconic Market House. This is now our third event and will be held on
Saturday, 16 May 2026 - 11am until 2pm.

A lot has changed since it was the Town’s Library and if you haven't been inside since, we are worth a look.
👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀

The day is part of the annual Rothwell Town Meeting, and volunteers from Rothwell Preservation Trust will be on-hand to conduct frequent and complimentary tours between 11 and 2pm.

The Tudor building is now almost 450 years old and is now beginning to show its age. The roof needs replacing and the stonework requires serious attention.

Donations are welcome for our Roof Appeal. Contactless, Cards and Cheques are accepted.

Kids! Are you the new Sir Thomas Tresham? 🤔👩‍👧‍👦👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

Thomas Tresham commissioned the Market House around 1577 and was known by another name - Thomas 'the Builder' due to his passion for building memorable constructions in Northamptonshire such as Rushton Triangular Lodge, Rushden Hall and Lyveden New Bield.

There is now an opportunity for infant and junior school children to follow in his footsteps - well, almost! 😀

Rothwell Preservation Trust is looking for imaginative young builders to construct a model of our iconic Market House 🏛️👷🏼‍♀️👷🏼‍♂️

Not from stone, but from something much easier to use - LEGO! Big, small, colourful, realistic or abstract, it doesn't matter, providing it resembles our iconic Market House. So, why not become a legend of LEGO and show-off your skills and imagination? 👌🤏🏼

All entries will be judged by Mayor of Rothwell, Ian Jelley and Sue Johnson, Chair of the Rothwell Preservation Trust - and there are prizes for the winners 🥇🏅

👥 WHO: Two categories - 'Infants' and 'Juniors' (based on school age).

⏰ WHEN: Drop off your models at the Council Offices in the Market House on either Tuesday, 31st March or Thursday, 2nd April between 10 and 2pm. See all the entrants on Good Friday (3rd April) upstairs at the Market House between 10 and 12 noon. Winners announced just after 1pm at the new Greening Road Play Park.

As part of the Trust's ongoing Fundraising Campaign to save the Market House, we're running a very special event!

Thanks to SmedaWines.co.uk, we're offering a limited number of tickets for a Wine-Tasting Evening in the iconic Market House. The tasting will include a selection of six reds, six whites and a special Port.

Welcome to our March edition of 'Market House News' keeping you in the loop with Rothwell Preservation Trust's activities and projects.

Did you know there are a number of Family Shields around the Market House roof perimeter? These represent families close to Sir Thomas Tresham who commissioned the construction of the building.

The 'eagle-eyed' amongst you will notice one that looks a little different, as it's not typical of the others from a design perspective - displaying just the letters 'FB'. 🤔🤔

'FB'? Was the Market House the ‘Facebook’ of its day!? We doubt it, but the building does display a lot of Sir Thomas Tresham’s friends and followers! Let us know your thoughts about the significance of ‘FB’... 🖊️✏️📝

The mystery surrounding 'FB' is all part of the Trust's wider research in finding out more about the history of the Shields and the associated families 🔎
