With the dry weather continuing in Northamptonshire and the Fire Severity Index still very high, there are a few simple things you can do to help reduce the risk of fires while both at home in your garden, or out-and-about in parks and countryside.

🚭 Fully extinguish ci******es and dispose of them safely - never throw cigarette ends from a vehicle – grass verges are incredibly dry at the moment

🥪 Pack a picnic rather than taking a disposable BBQ.

🗑️ Take your litter home or put it in a bin, especially glass bottles and jars. In certain conditions, they can focus the sun's rays onto dry vegetation and increase the risk of fire.

🍖 Having a BBQ in the garden? Avoid if it is windy, as sparks can quickly set fire to tinder dry grass. Site it away from shrubs, trees, plants and grass.

💧Don't leave a BBQ unattended, keep water or sand close by and fully extinguish barbecues after use.

🚫 Now isn’t the time for having a bonfire in the garden

📞 Report any signs of fire immediately by calling 999
Small actions can make a big difference. By taking a few simple precautions, we can all help protect Northamptonshire's countryside, wildlife, communities and firefighters during this period of very high fire risk. 🚒🌿☀️

🗑️ Take your litter home, especially glass bottles, which can help start fires in sunlight / hot weather.

🚗 Do not park vehicles on dry grass, as hot exhaust systems and catalytic converters can ignite vegetation.

It hasn't just been incidents relating to the weather we have been dealing with this week.

Our crews from Kettering and Raunds were called to a fire in flat in Kettering on Tuesday evening.

The candle had been left on back of toilet and left to burn all day as the owner forgot. The candle burnt through the toilet seat lid and melted the cistern.

The crew put the fire out and then cleared the heavy smoke throughout the flat.

Remember, when using candles please make sure they are in sturdy, heat-resistant holders on stable surfaces, and not placed on or near plastic surfaces. Keep them away from other flammable items such as curtains, bedding, and curtains.

We are all busy and it's easy to forget you have lit a candle. Please don't leave them unattended - try putting a timer on your phone to remind you to extinguish it. Candles shouldn't be used if you are sleepy or if you have been drinking as you may fall asleep leaving it burning.

With the warmer summer weather, water may look inviting, but the temperature of the water can be low enough to cause 'Cold Water Shock'.
Parents - make sure your children are aware of the dangers about jumping in, things can quickly go wrong, even for strong swimmers:

- Cold water shock
- Hidden hazards under the surface
- Strong currents and unseen forces
- Shallow or changing depths
- Impact injuries from height (tombstoning)

Make sure they know what to do if someone gets into trouble in the water:
❌ Don’t jump in
✅ Call 999
✅ Use something to help from the side (ball, stick, life ring)

Remember: Float to Live if you fall in unexpectedly.

Northamptonshire Fire & Rescue Service is currently recruiting for the next intake of Fire Cadets. If you know of a young person aged between 13 and 17 who would love to learn new skills, get hands on experience of life in the fire service and make a difference in their local community then please point them in our direction! But they need to hurry as applications close on June 30th!

Don't be alarmed if you see our appliances and crews around the Kettering Leisure Village area this evening, (Wednesday 27/05/26). Our firefighters are using the soft play area to test Breathing apparatus procedures within a complex building and working on several levels of soft play areas negotiating some confined spaces.

We appreciate having the use of different venues to hone our skills to ensure our crews are ready for any incidents. Thank-you to all those involved!

You may see Firefighters in the Highfield Road area of Kettering on a fairly regular basis 🚒👋

We are carrying out a variety of work in the area as part of a multi-agency operation to make the area safer.

If we knock on your door to carry out a Home Fire Safety Check, we aren't just there to ask if you have working smoke alarms but can also potentially assist with other safety or welfare related concerns that you may face in the home.

Please feel free to come and speak to us in the street if you would like any advice or a Home Fire Safety Check. We can also arrange to visit another time if you are busy.

At the weekend Kettering Firefighters from White Watch completed their challenge of the Boughton Backyard Ultra, to raise money for the Charity that supports Firefighters recover from injury and ill health. The challenge involved 24hrs of running a 4.2 mile course in the grounds of Boughton House near Kettering - that's 50 miles each! 🏃🏼

From midday Saturday to midday Sunday they ground it out in varying weather, from hot sun to driving rain in the darkness. Working closely as a team, they helped each other through the challenge with an amazing support crew made up of colleagues and family. There were some high highs and low lows! All of which they can laugh about now and made for some great memories! 💪🏼

So far they have raised £2,409 for the Charity which helps them stay well and ready to help the community. With a little help from you, they are hoping to break through that target of £2,500!! 👏🏼

Really enjoyed taking a trip to visit Kettering Fire Station last week to talk to the Firefighters about their role, current issues they are facing as a team and the safety in place to protect Kettering.
