Montagu Monuments

Montagu Monuments Four world-class monuments commemorating key members of the Montagu family, constructed between the 1740’s and 1820's. Open by appointment only.
(4)

These world class monuments were commissioned to commemorate key members of the Montagu family between the 1750’s and 1840’s, the Montagus being ancestors of the Buccleuch family at Boughton House. The first two monuments, by Louis François Roubiliac, are considered to be ‘two of the finest monuments in England’. Sculpted from fine Carrera marble, the monuments are dramatically positioned in four

recesses in a purpose built chancel within St Edmund’s church in the village. The Montagu Monuments are currently being restored by Skillington Workshop, due for completion in November 2014. There are opportunities to view the monuments prior to November. Please call for further information. The work is being part-funded by Heritage Lottery Fund. Please call 07803 241521 for further information.
