🍬🎃 Planning for Halloween? Think about the sweets you buy! 🎃🍬

When choosing Halloween treats, look out for sweets wrapped in recyclable foil.

Once the treats have been enjoyed, clean foil wrappers can be recycled, helping to reduce waste from the celebrations.

✅ Choose sweets with foil packaging where possible
✅ Empty and clean the foil after use
✅ Recycle it with your household recycling

Small choices can make a big difference. Enjoy a spooky Halloween while helping valuable materials stay in circulation. ♻️👻

Think that old charging cable, broken headphones or unused electronic gadget doesn't matter? Think again.
Every item with a plug, cable or battery becomes e-waste at the end of its life and should be recycled properly. ♻️
🛍️ Bag it and place it on top of or next to your green recycling container
🔋 Remove batteries first and place them in a separate bag alongside your electrical items
Let's keep valuable materials ending up in the bin.

🎄 Calling all early Christmas shoppers! 🎁

For all those early birds already getting ready for Christmas, now is a great time to think about sustainable gift wrapping.

Most wrapping paper, even some that is labelled "recyclable", contains glitter, foil, or plastic, which means it cannot be recycled at the kerbside.

✨ Help reduce waste and protect the planet by choosing brown paper or exploring creative, eco-friendly alternatives such as fabric wraps, newspaper, or reusable gift bags. Follow the link in the comments for more ideas.

📦 When the excitement of Christmas Day is over, brown paper can be placed in your blue recycling bag for kerbside collection.

If a jumper has a hole in it, or an airfryer just isn’t working anymore, what do you do? Bring it to a Repair Cafe!

In October, we’ve got lots of Repair Cafes on, as well as lots of exciting autumnal workshops planned. Scroll to find out more 👇

✨ Repair Cafes ✨

Come to one of our Repair Cafes and get your broken items repaired by our volunteers. Please arrive as early as possible to ensure there is time to work on your repair, and remember to bring any replacement zips or buttons with you.

All of our Saturday Repair Cafes run from 10am til 1pm, except:
✨ Saltford from 11am - 1pm
✨ Bathford from 9:30am - 12:00pm
✨ Bear Flat from 9.30am - 12.30pm
✨ Bradford on Avon from 10am - 12:30pm
✨ Corsham from 10:45am - 1pm

We have lots of interesting workshops running in October:

✨ HOW TO Use Your Sewing Machine Workshop ✨

Come and learn the basics of using your sewing machine, in 1-1 one hour slots. Running alongside our Repair Cafe at Southdown Methodist Church Hall, on Saturday the 3rd of October between 10am - 1pm.

✨ Darning Workshop ✨

Learn how to repair a hole in your jumper! Running alongside our Repair Cafe at Southdown Methodist Church Hall on Saturday the 3rd of October from 10:15am - 12:45pm.

✨ HOW TO Use Power and Hand Tools for Beginners ✨

One space left! Learn how to use power and hand tools safely on a range of different materials. At the Share and Repair Hub on Saturday the 10th of October, from 1:30 - 4:30pm.

✨ Clothing Stencil Workshop ✨

Make your clothes uniquely yours! At the Share and Repair Hub on Thursday 22nd October, 6:30 - 9pm.

✨ Teens Sort Out Your Jeans ✨

Learn how to repair your jeans with a range of woven textile mending techniques rooted in the elegant Japanese traditions of Boro and Sashiko! This workshop is for anyone aged 14 - 18 who’d like to get creative, run by us and Anna from Love Makers Cafe at the Share and Repair Hub on Thursday 29th October (half-term) from 9:30am - 12:30pm.

✨ FREE Kids Halloween Party ✨

Join us for a spooktacular afternoon of eco-friendly, Halloween-themed fun! Designed for children aged 7 to 11, this hands-on workshop features a thrilling carousel of creative repair and reuse activities.Running at the Share and Repair Hub on Friday 30th October (half-term) from 2 - 5pm.

Make your freezer work harder and help your food go further. Freezing food is a simple way to reduce waste, save money, and make future meals easier.

Try freezing:
🥪 Bread - take out slices as you need them for lunches or toast
🍌 Overripe bananas - perfect for smoothies or banana bread
🫐 Fruit - freeze before it goes soft and add to breakfast smoothies
🍝 Leftover pasta sauce or chilli - portion up for quick, easy meals
🧀 Grated cheese - ideal for toasties, pasta dishes and homemade pizzas
🥚 Eggs - crack into a sealable container and freeze in liquid form

🚪♻️ During September the Waste Campaigns Team has been out and about with Curo , door-knocking on flats across the area to help improve recycling facilities and support residents in making the most of the service we provide.
✅ We’ve been:
• Checking recycling capacity
• Offering advice on what can and can’t be recycled
• Providing reusable recycling bags to help residents carry their items to their mini recycling centres

Residents who can’t make it to a charity shop or the Keynsham Reuse Shop to donate reuseable items can now book a free collection of through Anglo Doorstep Collections .
Useable items accepted include:
👕 Clothing and shoes
📚 Books
🧸 Toys
🧵 Textiles
💿 CDs and DVDs
🏠 Household bric-a-brac
🔌 Small working electricals

⚠️ Thinking of using a private contractor? Be careful. If your waste is fly tipped by the people you hire, you could face a fine. Always check that anyone taking away your waste is a registered waste carrier and ask for proof. Check their licence on the Environment Agency’s website.
Please note, we are currently unable to collect fridges and freezers due to the UK wide issues affecting fridge and freezer recycling facilities. If you need your fridge or freezer taken away, please use a take back service, keep in storage or look to alternate collectors (see comments).
