The Old Mill will be opening this summer with an exciting project by Creative Stirling and the Old Mill. This is the fist stage of making the Old Mill the 'Gateway to Killin' watch this space for updates! The Old Mill, Killin is an unusual three-storey rubble building, built about 1840, at the north-west corner of the Bridge of Dochart, Killin. Last used as a Tweed Mill, it had formerly been a mea

l mill. It stands on a traditional site that has been occupied by a succession of meal mills over the centuries. The earliest is said to have been erected by St Fillan, who came from Ireland to bring Christianity in the late 6c. or early 7c. and for generations his healing stanes had been kept at the mill. When the mill was refurbished by Stirling Council, local people raised £11k. around half the sale price of the building, but gained no ownership. Now we want to see this iconic building in the hands of the people of Killin.

VARARFELDR EXHIBITION at the The Old Mill, Killin
August 14th to November 1st

ararfeldir were the shaggy, Viking-era “trade cloaks” worn by warriors, shepherds and kings alike in early Medieval Northern Europe.

This remarkable exhibition tracks the iconic garment’s history, from its ancient roots to its Irish counterparts to its ubiquitous status in Viking-era Scandinavia and beyond.

The exhibition is a collaboration between heritage weaver Sarah Rosenthal-Almirall and Old Norse scholar and author Alicia Anne Adams. It focuses on Sarah’s painstakingly handwoven recreations of seven historical cloaks, reworked from textile fragments found in archaeological sites across Iceland, Norway, Scotland, Estonia, and the Isle of Man.

Alicia has meanwhile delved into the historical laws and legends regarding vararfeldir, giving information on how the cloaks were made, traded and regarded in the Viking age. Guests will also enjoy a series of Alicia’s short stories, touching on the people who wove, traded and wore these remarkable cloaks, from weavers to warriors to legendary rulers.
