Volunteers’ Week feels like a good time to say this properly...

Spurn doesn't run without volunteers. It never has.

For well over a century, people have given their time, energy, skills and enthusiasm to make this place what it is today. From the earliest bird observatory pioneers to the volunteers helping us right now, their contribution is woven into every part of Spurn.

Some come for a week. Some stay for a season. Some end up coming back year after year. All of them matter.

Volunteers help monitor migration, assist with bird ringing, carry out habitat management, maintain our buildings and infrastructure, support conservation projects, welcome guests, enter data, help run events and tackle the countless jobs that happen behind the scenes every single day.

They help protect Little Terns, record birds for future generations, maintain the Observatory estate, support scientific research and ensure visitors have a warm welcome when they arrive.

Many people see the birds. What they don't always see is the incredible effort that goes into making everything else happen.

As an organisation, we simply couldn't achieve what we do without volunteers.

Throughout this week we'll be sharing some of their stories, experiences and favourite memories from their time at Spurn.

So to everyone who volunteers with us, whether you've been here for a weekend, a season or a lifetime, thank you.

Spurn is what it is because of you.

🎨 One of our most popular creative masterclasses is returning to Migfest.

We're delighted to welcome illustrator Viola Wang back to Spurn for Migfest 2026 with a brand new wildlife illustration, printing and animation workshop inspired by the birds, wildlife and landscapes of Spurn.

Viola's session proved extremely popular last year, attracting attendees of all abilities, from experienced artists to complete beginners. This year's workshop offers another opportunity to explore wildlife through a different lens, learning creative techniques while producing your own nature-inspired artwork.

No previous experience is required and all materials are provided, making this a great opportunity to try something new during the Migfest weekend.

The workshop forms part of our expanded Migfest Masterclass Series, which offers a range of small-group sessions covering bird identification, fieldcraft, photography, art and more.

📅 Migfest 2026: 11-13 September

🎟️ Masterclasses are available as optional add-ons for Migfest attendees. If you have already purchased your Migfest ticket, you should have received a link allowing you to book masterclasses and other extras.
