Saturday 29th August @ 1758

We were tasked to Silverknowes, Edinburgh, following a report of a dog having jumped over the seawall and fallen some 4m onto rock armour below.

Whilst en-route to the scene, we were advised that a member of the public had also entered the water to get to the dog.

We arrived to find the man and a Bernese Mountain dog on the rock armour at the base of the wall. We were able to approach the casualties and put the bow of the lifeboat on the rocks and get both onboard.

Both were ok, with only a few scuffs from the rocks. We took them to nearby steps and landed them ashore.

We were then stood down to return to station to prepare the lifeboat for the next launch.

Our volunteer crew was paged this afternoon following a report of concern for a kayaker off Seton Sands.

We were on scene 20 minutes after launch having made best speed across slight, occasionally moderate conditions. After a short search of the area, the kayaker was spotted near Craigielaw Point safe and well and paddling back to his launch point.

As there was a distance to go, we took the paddler and his kayak on board and returned to Longniddry Bents no.3 car park where North Berwick Coastguard Rescue Team was waiting to support and provide advice.

Our volunteer crew was tasked to assist a boat which had run out of fuel off Burntisland. We were soon on scene and alongside the RIB with three adults and two young children on board. After assessing the situation we elected to tow the boat into Burntisland. The crew of the boat were well equipped but had underestimated fuel for their day out.

We were paged to come to immediate readiness by the coastguard to support an incident upriver. Fortunately, the situation was safely resolved and we were stood down at 2252 without launching.

We were tasked to small vessel off Methil which had broken down and was taking on water. The boat, with two people on board, was towed into Methil harbour.

56/2026 @ 1854
Our pagers sounded for a second time following multiple reports of a kayaker in difficulty off Kirkcaldy.

Our volunteer crew was soon on scene and with the help of Kinghorn Coastguard Rescue Team who had eyes-on the casualty, we located what turned out to be a small inflatable toy dinghy over one mile offshore with one person on board. The person and dinghy were taken on board the lifeboat and taken back to shore.

The RNLI advises that inflatable toys and dinghies are not designed for open water or the beach because even a light breeze can quickly sweep them out to sea as happened in this case.

Safety Rules for the Beach and Open Water:

🛟Choose a RNLI Lifeguards Scotland lifeguarded beach (Aberdour Silver Sands, Burntisland, Leven, Elie, St Andrews East and West beaches, Broughty Ferry, and Coldingham)

🛟Check the wind: Never use an inflatable when an orange windsock is flying, which signals dangerous offshore winds that blow objects out to sea.

🛟Stay close: Remain extremely close to the shore, supervise children at all times, and only use inflatables on lifeguarded beaches between the red and yellow flags.

🛟Use a tether: Tie a safety line from the inflatable to someone holding the anchor point securely on the dry land.

🛟Wear buoyancy aids: Always wear a properly fitted lifejacket or buoyancy aid.

🛟Carry a phone: Keep a mobile phone or communication device inside a waterproof bag.

What to Do in an Emergency?
🛟Stay with the craft: If you get swept out or find yourself in trouble, stay with your inflatable dinghy because it helps rescue teams spot you much faster.

🚨Call 999: If you see anyone in difficulty in the water or drifting away, call 999 immediately and ask for the Coastguard

Thank you to all our supporters, groups, and partner agencies who came along to our Open Day and helped us raise a fantastic £6,300 for the RNLI

The weather was fantastic and everyone had a great day. There was no rest for our volunteer crew though who were tasked before the event at 0315 on Saturday morning, and then again at 2106 on Saturday evening to a grounded vessel at Car Craig rock, east of Inchcolm.

Our volunteer crew was tasked to carry out a shoreline search for a vulnerable missing person in the Leven area this morning.

After a search of the area and 3hrs 20min at sea, we were stood down with nothing found.

The crew had a quick turnaround as we are now preparing for our Open Day which begins at Kinghorn beach at noon to raise money for the RNLI
