🚑 Emergency Services Day | 9 September 💙
Today, on Emergency Services Day (999 Day), we recognise and thank the emergency service personnel who work tirelessly to keep families safe every day.
In maternity care, emergencies can happen unexpectedly during pregnancy, labour, birth, or after a baby is born. When urgent help is needed, ambulance crews, emergency call handlers, maternity teams, neonatal services, and hospital staff work together to provide rapid, life-saving care.
📞 999 is for life-threatening emergencies
If you or someone you know experiences a maternity emergency, calling 999 can ensure the right support is accessed quickly. Emergency call handlers will help assess the situation and guide the next steps while assistance is on the way.
Today we celebrate the dedication, professionalism, and compassion of all emergency service workers who support women, birthing people, babies, and families across our communities.

❗ Vaginal Bleeding in Pregnancy ❗

Vaginal bleeding can occur at any stage of pregnancy. In early pregnancy, it may be normal, but it can also be a sign of miscarriage. Later in pregnancy, bleeding may be linked to changes to the cervix, infection, the placenta, or other pregnancy-related conditions.

If you experience bleeding, consider:
• Whether you have any pain
• If you feel unwell
• Whether your baby's movements have changed

Signs of va**nal bleeding:
🔸 Brown discharge
🔸 Fresh red blood, from light spotting to bleeding that soaks maternity pads
🔸 Bleeding may occur with or without pain

⚠️ Always seek advice if you experience va**nal bleeding during pregnancy.

After 16 weeks:
📞 Contact your local maternity unit or call 999 in an emergency.

Before 16 weeks:
📞 Contact your GP, 111 (out of hours), the Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit (via GP referral), or 999 in an emergency.

When I cry, I want you ❤

Your love and attention, your warm cuddles and soft voice is familiar ❤

I sometimes feel sad and even though I keep crying I feel comfort in your arms ❤

You won’t make me 'clingy' if you cuddle me too much - you will make me feel more secure, connected and independent. I feel safe with you ❤

Please don't shout at me or get cross I am sorry I do not understand the big wide world yet ❤

I sometimes just want to know you are there ❤

Please don't leave me to 'cry it out' I will feel scared and distressed ❤

If it does feel a little too much then please put me somewhere safe and then come back to me when you have calmed down ❤

I know I disturb your sleep and keep you up through the dark, its normal for me to wake up as my sleep cycles are different to yours ❤

I know you won’t be able to comfort me all the time but please smile at me, hug me, sing to me to fill me with reassurance and love ❤

Adapting to motherhood can be hard, if you need more support or need someone to talk to then please do reach out to a health professional for additional help.

Today's second Super Sunday post comes from Kat:

"I’d like to thank everybody who supported and looked after me during the birth of my baby boy Max, born 23rd July 2026. Every member of staff involved was amazing ❤️

A huge thank you to midwives Lucy and Ellie who made sure I had a wonderful water birth, despite it being a bit of a whirlwind - 36 minutes from getting into the room!
I’d also like to give a special shoutout to Paula and Sara for their care after the birth. Words can’t describe how grateful I am for the amazing support and genuine care I received. 🫶"

"‘I would like to thank everyone who helped/assisted on the safe arrival of my little boy George William on the 19th of July, from maple ward and labour ward to Rowan, I had fabulous care throughout. Thank you to Joanne who I believe is now enjoying a well deserved retirement 🫶🏼
And a huge thank you to my very own personal midwife and cousin, Hayley, who has been there for both of my pregnancies, before, during and after answering questions at all hours of the day to put my mind at ease 🩵 ‘"

❗ Price increase to pregnancy scan photos

Due to ever increasing costs from our suppliers, we are unfortunately having to increase the price of photos when attending for Ultrasound scans.

📆Starting September 1, 2026, images will be available to purchase at your regular 12-week and 20-week scans.

The new prices are:

🟣£10.00 for 4 pictures

🟠£18.00 for 8 pictures

Want to buy just one?
🟢If you do not want a full set, you can now buy single pictures for £4.00 each.

Growth scans:
Pictures are not available to buy at growth scans

If you have an urgent matter call Triage from 16 weeks if you have any of the following concerns:

🚨Vaginal bleeding or spotting
🚨Severe or sharp abdominal pain or cramping
🚨Leaking fluid from the va**na (sudden or leaking)
🚨Severe headache or visual changes such as floaters or flashing lights
🚨Swelling in face, hands or feet
🚨Cramps in your lower back or pelvic area
🚨Itching especially on hands and feet
🚨Painful urination
🚨Change in your baby's movements (decreased, changed, absent or excessive)
🚨High temperature, fever or rigors
🚨Severe nausea or vomiting
🚨Shortness of breath or chest pain (999)
🚨You feel that something is wrong

Your maternity unit will assess you over the phone always trust your gut instinct and call for advice

Depending on the nature and urgency of your call we might sign post you to another appropriate health professional such as GP, community midwife or health visiting team

If you are under 16 weeks please contact your GP, 111 (out of hours) or accident and emergency.

*Remember the Ask A Midwife service is only for non-urgent questions*
