Recently, we attended a house fire caused by an overloaded electrical socket. Thankfully, the occupiers got out safely and were checked over by paramedics for minor smoke inhalation. But it could have been much worse.

Overloaded sockets, damaged cables and faulty plugs can all increase the risk of a fire starting in your home. Here’s our top tips:

✅ Avoid plugging too many appliances into one socket or extension lead as this can cause overheating.
✅ Never plug one extension lead or adapter into another
✅ Check plugs, sockets and extension leads for scorch marks and damage such as fraying and replace immediately.
✅ Test your smoke alarms regularly and make sure they beep when tested. Also have them on every floor of your home.
✅ If there’s a fire, get out, stay out and call 999. Never use water on an electrical fire.

Taking a few minutes to check your plugs, sockets and extension leads, and making sure your smoke alarms are working, can help prevent a fire and save lives if one starts.

When did you last test your smoke alarms?

We recently undertook a Fire Risk Assessment for a grade 1 listed premises which serves as a Museum, Wedding Venue and Hotel. Buildings such as this require intrinsic knowledge of historic buildings and the fire safety challenges they pose. A beautiful, historic building with priceless artifacts inside.

Carried out over 4 days resulting in a comprehensive report and action plan and ongoing support for the Estates Team.
