It's Freedom!

It's been wonderful to see so many people out in the city enjoying all the entertainment on offer.

This year's theme is peace and I hope if you have been you too experience a sense of peace.

Next year marks 20 years of Freedom. It's a very different event to what it was in those early years. It's brilliant for the city that we get to see shows from all around the world on our doorstep.

Freedom festival belongs to the people of Hull. Enjoy!

I understand there is a lot of concern around a protest being held in Hull City Centre on Saturday, being held at the same time as Hull's amazing Freedom Festival.

As someone with a long held passion for the Freedom Festival, I know just what it means to the residents of Hull and want to see it show the best of the city. This year is no different.

I want to be very clear that Hull City Council has no powers relating to the staging of protests in the city. Any arrangements for demonstrations in Hull City Centre are made between the protest organisers and Humberside Police.

This year the Freedom Festival has a message of peace. Instead of seeking to divide us this weekend, I would urge us all to come together and celebrate the city and everything the Freedom Festival has to offer.

It's this week! Hull's Freedom Festival kicks off in just a few days time. I'm looking forward to seeing all that is on offer - I hope you are too.

The festival began back in 2007, to mark 200th anniversary of William Wilberforce's the Slave Trade Act, abolishing the slave trade in the British Empire. Originally a lot of the acts were pop act heavy, with the likes of JLS, Peter Andre and Pixie Lott performing.

Over the years it has changed into a more cultural event, with theatrical and circus performances to entertain and challenge audiences. One of the highlights over the years has been the big set piece evening performances and the good news is that makes a return this year.

You can hear more about what is on offer in this podcast with festival director, Phil Hargreaves.

The latest phase of work on Freetown Way has been agreed. This is good news, as it helps get to what the residents of Hull have asked for - 2 lanes of traffic in both directions with off road cycle paths.

I know we all would have wanted this to be happening quicker, but it is moving forward and we will make it happen.

Now is your time to get involved. If you care about your community and want to be involved in the life of the city, we need you!

Next year there will be crucial council elections right here in Hull. The Lib Dem team is seeking people who want to stand for the council and stand up for their community.

If you want to talk more about this, get in touch.

Or you can fill in this form and we will contact you.

Don't leave it to someone else.
