On this day in 1989, Poland voted out communism — and changed the world. 🇵🇱🗳️

In the first partially free elections in the Soviet bloc, Solidarity won 99 out of 100 Senate seats. The communist party was crushed at the ballot box.

It was the beginning of the end of the Iron Curtain. Within months, the Berlin Wall fell. Within two years, the Soviet Union collapsed.

Poland didn't wait for permission to be free. They voted for it.

Most people have never heard of Wojtek — the Polish soldier who was also a bear. 🐻🇵🇱

In 1943, Polish soldiers in Iran found a small bear cub and adopted him. They named him Wojtek.

He learned to carry artillery shells at the Battle of Monte Cassino — one of the bloodiest battles of WWII. He watched the soldiers and copied them. He never dropped a single shell.

The Polish Army officially enlisted him as a private. He had his own rank, pay, and rations.

After the war, Wojtek lived at Edinburgh Zoo until 1963. Polish veterans would visit him and feed him ci******es — just like in the old days.

There is a statue of Wojtek in Edinburgh. And one in Chicago.
