WHAT’S IN A NAME?

The Government has confirmed that the new unitary authority for Fylde, Wyre and Blackpool will be called Fylde Coast.

There’s been plenty of debate about the name:
• Reform at Lancashire County Council want “Lancashire” included in every new unitary title, with ideas like Lancashire West or Coastal Lancashire being suggested.
• Labour run Blackpool want the name changed so that Blackpool appears in the title.

But unless all councils agree unanimously, the name stays as it is.

‘Fylde Coast’ aptly fits the geography of the area and is widely used already by residents, businesses, tourism bodies, health services and media. It is recognisable and authentic, and we're happy to stick with it.

Works in St Annes Square - Cllr Karen Buckley, Leader of Fylde Borough Council

There have been some rather wild and inaccurate accusations claiming Fylde Council has ‘run out of money’ because the Pier Link pavement on the side of Braxfield Court is tarmac and not Kellen paving.
The project was tendered on the basis that the south side of the Pier Link would be finished in asphalt, with the extended north side finished in Kellen paving.

As the project progressed, we identified a budget surplus through careful cost management and began exploring potential enhancements across the wider public realm programme, including Pier Link, Orchard Road and Garden Street.

For Pier Link, we are able to upgrade the corner junctions with the Promenade using surplus Kellen Paving and with Clifton Drive using reclaimed Yorkstone from the Square.

On Orchard Road, in response to traders’ concerns, we are levelling up the slipped pavements which are a trip hazard and planting trees, and on Garden Street the contractors are laying reclaimed Yorkstone to the area beyond The Sanctuary and also renewing the asphalt – all of which is to make the frontages to the shops and businesses safe and attractive to encourage customers.

So, not run out of money, just continuing to invest in our community.

The project is expected to complete by the end of August/beginning of September on Pier Link and by the end of October on the other areas.

1860 Bistro - A new chapter for a much-loved Kirkham landmark 🏛️

Fylde Council have secured the future of the Grade II listed Charity Girls School in Kirkham, preserving an important part of the town’s history for generations to come.

The story of the building goes back even further than its 1860 construction. A girls’ charity school was established in Kirkham as far back as 1760, before moving into this purpose-built building on Poulton Street in 1860.

The school later closed, and the building went on to have several different uses, including as a community hall and a Lloyds/TSB bank. After the bank closed, the building stood empty and its future was uncertain.

In 2022, Fylde Council purchased the building to protect this important heritage asset. Following a major refurbishment, including a new rear extension, this historic building has now been given a new lease of life as 1860 — a sports bar, coffee lounge and bistro named after the year the school moved into the building.

It is fantastic to see this beautiful building back in use and playing a new role in the life of Kirkham.
From a charity school for girls, to a bank, to a vibrant new venue — 1860 is the latest chapter in a remarkable 266-year story.

St Annes Square: One Year On!

The £3m transformation has turned the Square into a vibrant hub for markets, music, festivals and family fun. So many gatherings have taken place, such as Fylde Fest in October and March, weekly yoga, the fabulous Christmas Switch On, daytime ‘Sounds’ and ‘Steps’ in the Square, and Artisan markets. The Square has been buzzing all year and there’s plenty more on the way.

Solar Farm Refused in Staining and Hardhorn

Fylde Council has refused the massive 54 hectare solar/BESS scheme after the developer failed to meet even the basic safety and environmental requirements.

The plans would have pushed HGVs down narrow rural lanes, risking pedestrians and Public Rights of Way users, with no proof the roads could safely handle the traffic. Key drainage, pollution control and access details were missing, and the developer refused to extend the timeline so the Council could get full expert advice.

This was an industrial scale development partly in the Green Belt, with major landscape and ecological impacts and the applicant did not provide the evidence needed to make it safe.
These green energy initiatives may appear good on the face of it but should not be supported at any cost.

Fylde Council has made the right call. Community protected. Rural character protected. Highway safety protected.

AIG Women’s Open Golf Championship ⛳️

What a fantastic few days for Lytham St Annes! Many congratulations to the Royal & Ancient and everyone at Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club for hosting a superb AIG Women’s Open. The members, volunteers and staff delivered an outstanding event showcasing women’s golf at its very best.
A big well done to this year’s champion, Shiho Kuwaki, aged 23 from Japan, whose brilliant performance and tense play off was incredible to watch.

With a record crowd of 55,000, the Women’s Open Championship brought visitors from across the globe, giving a welcome boost to our hotels, restaurants and shops. It was also a great family week, with putting and driving coaching, treasure hunts, shuffleboard, co****le, and creative indoor activities, all free for under 16s.

Huge thanks to Fylde Council for supporting the event, coordinating with partners, providing extra parking, and adding to the fun with crazy golf in St Annes Square and Ashton Gardens.

And thank you to the residents around the course for your patience with the extra traffic and activity.
A memorable week for Fylde — and a proud moment for women’s sport.

Kirkham Councillor Adam Brierley, was first on the scene today with the Leader of Fylde Council, Karen Buckley, to inspect the new banners up on the Kirkham Baths hoardings, featuring beautiful original heritage architectural drawings that give a glimpse into the building’s past.

Fylde Council is investing £3 million on this site to fully restore Kirkham Baths, in partnership with Places Leisure, and work is already underway on this huge project, scheduled to open in 2028.

They specialise in helping councils deliver high quality, accessible facilities, with a strong focus on health, wellbeing and community activity.
