From that 999 call to hitting the water, have you ever wondered what happens before our lifeboats launch?

It's a coordinated effort with the Maritime and Coastguard Agency and, of course, our wonderful lifeboat station volunteers.

🥳 CONGRATULATIONS TO DAVID OVERTON-GREEN ... OUR NEWEST LAUNCH AUTHORITY! 🥳

The Launch Authority role is central to lifeboat operations, responsible for coordinating with the coastguard, deciding if the lifeboat is to launch, and supporting or deputising for the Lifeboat Operations Manager when required.

Training included intensive weekly sessions along with online evening workshops with trainers from the RNLI college at Poole. David then underwent his assessment under the supervision of Coastal Lifeboat Trainer Ally Young.

The pass out involved a demanding shore based evaluation designed to test David's understanding of RNLI policies, station procedures, SOPs, and his ability to make sound decisions in emergency scenarios. The assessment ensures that every Launch Authority is fully prepared for the pressures of real time lifeboat deployment.

David joined the RNLI in 2023 and has already shown impressive dedication having passed out as Shore Crew and Head Launcher.

We simply couldn’t deliver our life saving service without volunteers and we would like to congratulate David on the personal commitment he's made.

👊 AMANDA PIRIE PASSES OUT AS TIER 2 CREW 👊

Yesterday we saw Area Coastal Lifeboat Trainer, Alasdair Young, arrive from the mainland to rigorously test Amanda ... who of course passed her Tier 2 qualification with flying colours!

Rachel Hedderwick, Arran's Atlantic 85 lifeboat, was launched with Amanda demonstrating skills such as Anchoring, MOB (Man Over Board), Search & Rescue, Vessel Handling, Essential Seamanship and Leadership ... while being put under pressure from the Costal Lifeboat Trainer!

To reach this stage Amanda has already had to pass her Tier 1 qualification and log a LOT of hours on the boat! She's also had to undertake countless courses online, at the lifeboat station in Lamlash and week long trips to the training college in Poole!

Congratulations from all the crew at Arran RNLI … it’s a testament to your commitment and hard work.

💡 LIGHTHOUSE SCREENING RAISES £200+ FOR THE RNLI

Volunteer crew from Arran RNLI were delighted to be invited to talk about the charity that saves lives at sea after a screening of films about the men, women & families who ran Scotland's lighthouses before they went fully automated.

The screening, held at Corrie Village Hall, was well attended and after a number of informative & captivating films we got to speak about the RNLI, Arran's lifeboat station ... and even persuaded those watching to try the dry suit challenge!!!

Our crew were blown away by the generosity of everyone who donated and would like to thank those who attended. Special thanks must also go to Martine Robertson from GaelGal Creative Productions for the Northern Lighthouse Heritage Trust and Sarah Cook for organising such a great event.

Today 19 December we remember the valiant crew of the Penlee lifeboat Solomon Browne. The heroic volunteer crew who freely gave their lives in a bid to save others in hurricane force 12 winds on 19 December 1981.

Coxswain William Trevelyan Richards, Second Coxswain/Mechanic Stephen Madron, Assistant Mechanic Nigel Brockman, Emergency Mechanic John Blewett, Crew member Charles Greenhaugh, Crew member Kevin Smith, Crew member Barrie Torrie, Crew member Gary Wallis.

Lieutenant Commander Russell Smith, the pilot of the Sea King helicopter, who watched the rescue attempt from above, recounted:

‘The greatest act of courage that I have ever seen, and am ever likely to see, was the penultimate courage and dedication shown by the Penlee crew. They were truly the bravest eight men I've ever seen, who were also totally dedicated to upholding the highest standards of the RNLI.’

The thoughts of Arran RNLI today lie with the families and friends of the 16 who perished that dreadful night aboard the Solomon Browne and the Union Star.

🚨 SHOUT! MAN OVER BOARD?🚨

Yesterday at 2.51pm the pagers went off after an emergency beacon was activated in Brodick Bay indicating a MOB (man over board) might have occurred!

Obviously time could be limited for the casualty especially in the cold winter sea, so the volunteer crew at Arran RNLI were quick to respond and the lifeboat launched within 9 minutes of the pager sounding!

Arriving on scene the crew, using state of the art equipment we have onboard the lifeboat, determined the beacon was in fact on land and fortunately not a casualty in trouble. Despite this they did a sweep of the area and spoke to the captain of a moored yacht just to make sure.

After this information was passed to Belfast Coastguard the lifeboat was stood down and returned to the station in Lamlash by 4.00pm … where it was cleaned, refuelled and made ready for service.

If you see someone in trouble at sea or along the coast, please don’t hesitate to dial 999 or 112 and ask for the coastguard.
