Chris and the volunteers have been working hard to make a usable garden space behind the ecolodge for guests, so that they have a peaceful place to sit and watch wildlife (and cows!). It will make such a difference to the ecolodge experience, for guests to have a private slice of nature to themselves 🌿

We'll be keeping an eye out here for new queens too. 👀🪲🫅

Now is the perfect time to spot new bumblebee queens 👑

🌷 At this time of year, new bumblebee queens can be seen feeding on flowers to build up body fat to hibernate over winter.

❄️ If there is still a lot of food available, some queens might skip their winter hibernation and establish a nest this year.

🏡 If you see queens with full pollen baskets then there is probably a nest somewhere nearby.

The bumblebee queen checklist:
⬆️ Much larger than males and workers
🍬 Appear 'fresh out of the wrapper' with neat hair and shiny wings
🔔 Often have a louder, deeper buzz due to their larger size
🧺 Have pollen baskets (shiny, flattish segments) on their hind legs

Such an interesting course today learning how to create a wildlife pond. Chris shared lots of interesting points and we all went away inspired to make a small difference to wildlife in our gardens.

According to the National Trust, there were only 8 sightings of the Hummingbird Hawk Moth in the UK in 2021, but this is a bumper year for sightings. I've never seen one before, but halfway through the "Design a butterfly garden" workshop, one appeared outside the training room door! Clearly a mark of approval!

Have you seen one?
They are most distinctive from the way they hover over flowers like a hummingbird, beating their wings up to 80 times per second, and giving off a faint humming sound from the speed of their wings. Amazing creatures! 🤩🦋

If you want to come and try to spot one for yourself, don't forget that you are welcome to walk the trails around Denmark Farm from dawn to dusk, 364 days a year, and there are maps to borrow at the welcome shelter, or on the walking trails page of our website.
Dogs on leads very welcome.
