Our statement on the issues facing students in Lent term:
The Covid-19 pandemic has completely changed the student experience, both in a social, and an academic sense. Claims that things are now like normal because of the more effective use of online tools are false. In that context, we want to address some key issues in how Lancaster University students have been treated.
We agree with calls from many students for a rent rebate for certain students affected by the pandemic and lockdown, for instance those unable to return to university due to lockdown restrictions, or who have chosen not to return for the sake of their mental health, among other issues. However, we feel that current campaigns have not paid due regard to the situation of students in private accommodation. We call on the Students' Union to lobby landlords and student housing companies for a similar rebate.
We also fully endorse the petition by Noah Katz to introduce a significant ‘safety net’, and we wish to see further action taken: https://lancastersu.co.uk/thestudentvoice/introduce-a-significant-safety-net-for-the-remainder-of-the-2020-21-academic-year?utm_campaign=website&utm_source=uc&utm_medium=email. We want to see end of year assessment mirror the assessment offered in the 2019/20 academic year. Exams should be optional; coursework must be marked with the leniency seen for 2019/20 Lent term assessment; and a no detriment policy must be implemented, so that a student's aggregate grade is no lower than as of Friday Week 10 of the 2020/21 academic year (11th December 2020). With national lockdowns taking place in each term of this academic year so far, we believe that our education has been far more negatively affected this year than last year - measures up to the level of what students were offered last year are entirely appropriate.
