Discover Chapel Island with Bay Hospitals Charity on 5 September 2026

Experience the magic of Morecambe Bay by joining Bay Hospitals Charity on a memorable guided walk to Chapel Island, a hidden gem in the Leven Estuary surrounded by vast, ever‑changing sands.

Setting off from Canal Foot near Ulverston, the journey takes you across the open shoreline, offering spectacular views and a real sense of the Bay’s scale and beauty. After crossing the River Leven, we will make our way to Chapel Island itself, where walkers can take time to explore and spot the diverse wildlife that calls the island home. You will also pass the historic Collins Weir, a long‑lost cart route that resurfaced in 2024 after more than 70 years beneath the sands and is expected to be visible again this year.

The route loops back to Canal Foot and covers approximately two to six miles, with the walk taking around three hours in total.

Although the walk is suitable for most people, a reasonable level of fitness is recommended. Safety is paramount, and you will be led across the shifting sands by Raymond Porter, the Bay’s highly respected and Royally appointed King’s Guide.

Places are now available, but numbers are strictly limited, so early booking is encouraged. We would love your company, please join us for an unforgettable day.

Newly refurbished changing facilities now open at Westmorland General Hospital
Colleagues at Westmorland General Hospital are now benefiting from newly refurbished changing facilities, following a £153,000 investment from NHS Charities Together.
The funding, awarded to Bay Hospitals Charity through the Stage 3 Covid-19 Recovery Grant, is part of a wider programme focused on supporting staff health, wellbeing and recovery across the Trust. Improving the changing facilities at WGH was identified as a key priority.
The refurbishment brings WGH in line with the high-quality facilities already in place at Furness General Hospital. Feedback from colleagues highlighted how valuable these improved spaces were during the pandemic, and it was important to provide the same standard at WGH.
The upgraded facilities include modern, more comfortable changing areas, improved shower and washroom facilities, and durable, easy-to-clean materials to support infection prevention. Together, these changes create a more practical, dignified and supportive environment for colleagues before and after shifts.
This project has been made possible through close collaboration between NHS Charities Together, Bay Hospitals Charity, Estates and Facilities teams, and colleagues at WGH who shared feedback and helped shape the design.
Thank you to everyone who contributed to this project, from those who shared feedback to the teams who delivered the refurbishment. Your support has helped create a space that will benefit colleagues across WGH every day.
