My name is Tom Rutland and I’m our Member of Parliament for East Worthing and Shoreham.

Before being elected as our MP in July 2024, I worked for a trade union and a regulator, fighting for workers’ rights and supporting vulnerable consumers. Alongside a strong desire for every child to get the best start in life, these experiences are what motivated me to get into politics.

I love living in Shoreham and fighting for our home in Parliament and I wanted to let you know about a few things I’ve been working on for Shoreham since the election.

I’ve secured £1.4m of flood defence funding for Adur and worked with the council to get the Shoreham flood wall finished (works commencing soon). I’ve successfully campaigned for the Rampion Wind Farm to be expanded, and when it’s complete, it will produce enough clean energy to meet all of Sussex’s electricity needs – and solar panels are coming to the roof of Southlands Hospital to make its energy cleaner and cheaper. The Southlands Hospital Community Diagnostic Centre is also now open from 08:00 – 20:00, seven days a week, giving patients greater flexibility to attend appointments around work, school and personal commitments.

I am working with Shoreham-by-Cycle to push West Sussex County Council to install the cycle lane to Hove on the A259, and also working with local residents on street safety around Swiss Gardens Primary School and on the Old Shoreham Road.
On the topic of schools, I’ve also helped unblock funding for the new roof at St Nicolas and St Mary CE Primary School, visited the new Government-funded free breakfast club at Holmbush Primary Academy and worked with Shoreham Academy, Sir Robert Woodard Academy and West Sussex County Council to prevent the secondary school place shortages we’ve previously seen in Shoreham from happening again.

I also brought the Business Secretary to Shoreham to showcase our fantastic local businesses including Neighbourhood Store and Palate!

Tree planting at the Community Farm in Lancing, pictured here with volunteers Adrian and Anna. The trees being planted are there to form a natural hedgerow, said Adrian, Chair of the Trustees of Apron Creative. He continued - over the next five years, we aim to return the former equestrian site into land that will support food production and a natural space for people and wildlife to co-exist.

Today’s local paper drew a clear contrast between two groups at Adur District Council: a Labour administration focused on delivering for residents, and another group seemingly more focused on saving its own skin.

A brace, gaggle, trio of Southwick councillors on a litter-pick in Butts Road. Out on the Southwick Estate with local PCSO Karen and Adur housing officers. Working together to improve the safety and living conditions of this neglected part of the district and county.

District council elections are on for 7 May! Labour leader of Adur District Council Jeremy Gardner said the change was a "suprise", but not a "headache" for the local authority.
"We have been preparing for an election," he told BBC Radio Sussex.
He urged residents to "please vote for people who will genuinely put the work in and improve your community".
Gardner said Labour was "definitely not" fearful of the challenge by Reform UK.
"We are confident we will be standing on our record. We are a council that is getting things done. We are supporting people struggling with the cost of living, fixing council homes, planting trees," he continued.

In Redhill today learning about the work of Kent Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance and meeting people whose lives have been saved by this amazing charity. It costs £57k a day to maintain the service which relies almost entirely on funding from the general public. Please support their life-saving work if you can.
