🐑🐕 Dog Owners: Please Keep Your Dogs Under Control Around Livestock 🐕🐑

With many people enjoying Cornwall's countryside, we'd like to remind dog owners of the importance of keeping dogs under close control when near livestock.

Even the most friendly and well-behaved dog can cause significant distress to sheep, cattle and other farm animals. Chasing, barking at, or disturbing livestock can lead to injury, suffering, miscarriage, or death. Livestock worrying is a criminal offence.

Recent changes to the law have strengthened protections for livestock. The Dogs (Protection of Livestock) legislation now provides police with greater powers to investigate incidents, including seizing and detaining dogs involved in livestock worrying. Penalties have also increased, with offenders facing an unlimited fine in the most serious cases.
✅ Keep your dog on a lead around livestock.
✅ Be aware of your surroundings and nearby fields.
✅ Never allow your dog to chase or approach farm animals.
✅ Report any livestock attacks or worrying incidents to police.

Appeal to Farmers and Livestock Owners-

Working with the Devon & Cornwall Police Rural Affairs Team , we are encouraging farmers and livestock owners to report all incidents of livestock worrying to police, no matter how minor they may seem.

Reports help us identify repeat offenders, build intelligence around problem areas, and take action to protect livestock and rural communities.
If safe to do so, please record details of the dog, owner, vehicles, location, and retain any CCTV, photographs or other evidence, but it is important that incidents are reported to Police.

Your information is vital in helping us tackle livestock worrying and wider rural crime, and by reporting to Police you are helping us to support your local farming communities.

Report non-emergencies via 101, or call 999 if the incident is happening at the time.

⚠️ Appeal to Parents and Young People ⚠️

Launceston Police have received reports of youths trespassing in agricultural fields and causing criminal damage to water taps and livestock water systems.

During the current hot weather, this behaviour can have a serious impact on the welfare of animals that rely on these water sources. Damage to water supplies can leave livestock without access to drinking water and creates significant costs for farmers, who must repair the damage and refill water containers.

We would like to remind everyone that entering private land without permission and causing damage is unacceptable and may constitute a criminal offence.

As the summer holidays begin, we ask parents and guardians to please make sure you know where your children are, who they are with, and what they are doing. A simple conversation can help prevent incidents like this and protect local farms, animals, and the wider community.
