🚫🔥 Please Don’t Burn Garden Waste 🔥🚫

With the current hot, dry weather, the wildfire risk across Cornwall remains very high.

What might seem like a small garden fire can quickly get out of control. A single spark carried by the wind can ignite dry grass, hedgerows, gorse and heathland, putting people, wildlife, homes and firefighters at risk.

Please help keep Cornwall safe by:
✅ Composting your garden waste
✅ Taking it to your local Household Waste Recycling Centre
✅ Waiting until conditions are safer before having any bonfires

By making a simple choice today, you could help prevent the next wildfire.

The Incident command unit (ICU) from Launceston Community Fire Station was mobilised in the early hours of this morning to relieve the crew from St Just, who remain in attendance at the ongoing wildfire at Nanquidno Downs, St Just.

Over the past 24 hours, crews from Penzance, St Just, St Ives, Tolvaddon, Perranporth, Falmouth, Helston, Truro, Newquay, Padstow, Polruan, Looe, Launceston and Callington have been working tirelessly to bring the fire under control and support the ongoing incident.

Firefighters have sectorised the incident, with a High Volume Pump (HVP) being used to provide a continuous water supply to aid firefighting operations.

Local residents are advised to keep doors and windows closed due to smoke and to avoid the area while emergency services continue to work.

Help prevent wildfires

Most wildfires in the UK are caused by human activity, so a few simple precautions can make a huge difference:

✅ Avoid lighting barbecues or campfires in dry countryside – take a picnic instead.
✅ Dispose of ci******es and smoking materials responsibly.
✅ If you spot signs of a wildfire, move to a safe location and call 999 immediately.

Wildfire smoke can also affect people’s health, particularly those with asthma, heart or lung conditions, older adults, young children and pregnant women. Please help us reduce the risk and protect our countryside.

One appliance from Launceston Community Fire Station was mobilised to a vehicle fire on the outskirts of Launceston on the A388.

On arrival, crews were met with a vehicle that was well alight, with the fire beginning to spread to the adjacent hedgerow.

Using 2 Hose Reel Jets (HRJ), Breathing Apparatus (BA) and a Thermal Imaging Camera (TIC), firefighters quickly brought the fire under control and prevented further spread.

Crews remained on scene to make the vehicle safe, manage traffic, and await the arrival of Devon & Cornwall Police and National Highways.

A reminder to motorists: If your vehicle catches fire, pull over safely if possible, switch off the engine, move everyone well away from the vehicle, and call 999 immediately. Never attempt to tackle a well-developed vehicle fire yourself.

One appliance from Launceston Community Fire Station was mobilised alongside Bodmin Community Fire Station to reports of a car fire on the westbound carriageway of the A30.

One appliance from Launceston Community Fire Station and one from Bude Community Fire Station were mobilised to another baler fire. Thankfully, the tractor driver was able to disconnect the baler from the tractor quickly, limiting the damage caused.

It has been another busy morning for our on-call firefighters. It’s worth remembering that every one of them also has a primary job alongside their role in the fire service. Without the dedication of our firefighters and the flexibility and support of their employers, the on-call service simply wouldn’t be able to provide the level of cover it does.

A huge thank you to all of our on-call firefighters and to the employers who support them.

🚒 It’s certainly been a busy few days! 🚒

With the recent hot weather, we’ve been incredibly busy and haven’t had much opportunity to keep everyone updated.

Here’s what the last 72 hours have looked like for Launceston Community Fire Station crews:

📟 Shout 📟 10:49 – 10/07/2026

One appliance from Launceston Community Fire Station was mobilised to assist crews from Liskeard Community Fire Station and Bodmin Community Fire Station at a large outbuilding fire.

📟 Shout 📟 15:06 – 11/07/2026

One appliance from Launceston, alongside crews from Callington Community Fire Station, Liskeard Community Fire Station and Tavistock Community Fire Station, was mobilised to a fire in a farm workshop.

📟 Shout 📟 11:38 – 12/07/2026

Both appliances from Launceston, together with crews from Callington, Bodmin, Liskeard and several appliances from Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service, were mobilised to a tractor fire in a field. The fire quickly spread to the straw being baled, before extending across a further three straw fields and nearby hedgerows, threatening the farm itself.

All crews involved worked tirelessly in extremely challenging temperatures to bring the incident under control, preventing further spread and successfully extinguishing the fire.

We’d like to take this opportunity to remind everyone to take extra care during this period of hot, dry weather, as the risk of fire remains exceptionally high.

Both appliances from Launceston Community Fire Station , 1 from Callington Community Fire Station and 1 from Holsworthy Fire Station were mobilise to reports of a residential Fire in St Giles on the Heath.

On arrival crews were faced with a semi detached bungalow issuing a large amount of smoke from the roof space. Crews wearing BA investigated and discovered a fire within a boiler cupboard.

Crews extinguished the fire ventilated the property and adjoining bungalow whilst a whole time officer conducted their fire investigation.

The saving grace on this particular incident was the fact that occupant had shut the door to the boiler cupboard preventing extensive fire spread, had the door not been shut. This incident would’ve escalated rapidly.

Cruise returned home at 07:00 hours.

Thank you for your unwavering dedication and for being such an important part of our community.

Two appliances, one from Launceston Community Fire Station and one from Delabole Community Fire Station attended a large moorland fire in the early hours of the morning near Bowithick.

Crews accessed the affected area via foot and used beaters to extinguish the fire which was approximately a mile in length.

Two whole time officers also attended one of which deployed their drone to assist crews with extinguishing the fire and monitoring hotspots from above.

Crews returned to home stations at around 3:30 am.

One appliance from Launceston Community Fire Station went to a residential property fire in the village of Cardinham.

On arrival crews were faced with 2 vehicles well alight, one of which was parked in a car port under the property.

Crews used BA, HRJ and MJ to extinguish the fire.

We was on scene with St Austell Community Fire Station Newquay Community Fire Station & Truro Community Fire Station

Both pumps from Launceston Community Fire Station were mobilised after fire control received multiple 999 calls at 01:24 reporting a fire in the kitchen of a public house on Race Hill, Launceston on Sunday 8th February 2026.

Launceston were immediately mobilised, along with a wholetime officer. Upon arrival, crews requested additional resources, making pumps four. A further two appliances from Callington Community Fire Station and Bodmin Community Fire Station, along with a second officer, were subsequently mobilised.

Fire crews report a fire within a two-storey building measuring approximately 10 metres by 5 metres. Two hose reel jets and one main jet were in use to extinguish the fire.

Crews confirmed the fire had been extinguished a short while later. The cause was deemed to be accidental and spread. All appliances returned to home stations.

Thankfully all residents managed to escape the premises unharmed. This just re literates the importance of testing your smoke alarms regularly.
