Thankyou to everyone who came along to our Desert Island craft last week.

We talked about the various things we would like to find if we were washed up on an island. Suggestions included an ice cream tree, a pandemonium of parrots and coconuts which taste of chocolate as well as sharks with legs! (I'm less keen on the latter). Then the children put had a go at creating their ideal island.

Here are a few of the amazing islands constructed. They all did such a brilliant job.

Then we finished with a Pirate story.

We still have spaces available next week (Wednesday the 12th) for our Pirate Parrot shoulder buddy craft. These can be booked here:

There is a charge of £3 per child for these events, with discounts available depending on circumstances.

Thank you to everyone who came along to our first drop in session last Wednesday. We had a brilliant time learning how to spell out our names using flag semaphore along with handy words and phrases like "Yarr" and "X marks the spot!".

Many pirate vessels were constructed, several planks were walked, books were borrowed and Pirate Pete became quite possibly the best dressed pirate to sail the seven seas.

We still have 2 spaces left for our craft and story time this Wednesday the 29th of July where we will be making our own desert islands complete with tree houses. This can be booked online here:

https://aberdeenshire.spydus.co.uk/cgi-bin/spydus.exe/FULL/WPAC/EVSESENQ/464649328/130810110,2

There is a charge of £3 per child with discounts available depending on circumstances.

Our next drop in event will be on Wednesday the 5th of August from 10 am.

What's on at Mearns Community Library during the summer holidays part 2

Join us on Wednesday the 29th of July at 10.30 am for a story and craft session.

We will be making our very desert islands complete with treehouses. This is a bookable activity suitable for children aged 3 and upwards, costing £3 (discounts available depending on circumstances).

For younger children especially, we will have some pre-made items and lots of stickers to add personality to the island.

Places can be booked by going here:

Only one week to go until the Summer Reading Challenge begins!

It’s that time of year again — we’re getting ready for the Summer Reading Challenge!

Our theme this year is “Just Read!”, celebrating 2026 as the National Year of Reading.
It’s also especially fitting as we celebrate 25 years of the Summer Reading Challenge in Aberdeenshire Libraries.

Whether you love adventure, mystery, magic, or something totally new, this year is all about discovering the joy of reading in your own way.
