I'm surprised that Michael Commissioners have come out so strongly against the possibility of wind turbines in Druidale, without seemingly consulting anyone, or calling a public meeting first.
They are reported as saying that the proposal for Druidale will be just as bad as the site in the South at Earystane. In fact both are good sites for wind turbines, which is why Manx Utilities are considering both before selecting one.
It is likely that both sites will be used in the future, but Manx Utilities have been asked by Tynwald to bring one into production by 2026.
Each site has some disadvantages and Michael Commissioners would be best highlighting particular concerns around Druidale rather than their current 'nimby' approach, which serves no-one.
What are their real objections, and where do they suggest an offshore wind farm goes instead? Because the Island needs onshore wind to help reduce our CO2 emissions.
The government declared a climate emergency several years ago now. Are Michael Commissioners wanting to row back from reality?

Together we can make change recyclecollectors! And we are already doing so - look at this record month for November! ♻️💪

Together we have already made significant impact since recyclecollect started, and we are now collecting over 8.5 tonnes of recycling per month for 720 households. 🤩 But think of what we could do if our whole island was on board! 💚🇮🇲

So why kerbside recycling? Here’s a few reasons:

⭐️Recycling saves energy and reduces our demand on the earth’s raw natural resources. For example recycling aluminium saves 95% of the energy required when compared to extraction from mining. Let’s make sure we use recyclable materials to their full potential! They are already in existence so let’s not be wasteful and help prevent the need for extraction from our earth. 🌎

⭐️ Improves accessibility - available from the comfort of your home, kerbside recycling makes it easy and convenient for people to get involved. From people who live with disabilities, to people who can’t drive or lead busy lifestyles, kerbside recycling is suitable for everyone. We got you 💚

⭐️ Reduces the risk of contamination - we sort your recycling on kerbside, returning any items which cannot be recycled to ensure the best recycling rate we can. Large community drop offs can be more difficult to police.

⭐️ Improves education - let’s get our children involved! Encouraging recycling to be the norm in households demonstrates the importance of recycling to our future generations. We are delighted to see so many families getting involved and instilling sustainable practices in their homes.

⭐️ Recycling can save money! Did you know it costs £97 per tonne to send waste to the EfW. That includes if you put things in your bin that don’t burn 😩 (heavy materials like glass and metals especially!). Recyclable materials can be sold to generate a return - yes even from the Isle of Man! Cardboard, paper, plastic and aluminium are packaged up tightly for maximum efficiency before their short journey. Glass and steel stays (the heavy stuff!) stays here on the island.

We are so grateful for everyone who supports us on our mission to improve the Isle of Man’s recycling rate. We feel positive for the future and excited to be here to help. 🇮🇲💚
