Families urged to check Free School Meal eligibility as support expands ​

National eligibility changes have been made to Free School Meals and we are urging our Westmorland and Furness families to check whether they are eligible for Free School Meals (FSM). From September 2026 all households receiving Universal Credit can apply, regardless of income. Families must still apply, as eligibility is not awarded automatically.

The changes remove the previous earnings threshold for Universal Credit claimants, meaning more working families who receive Universal Credit top-up payments may now qualify for support.

Councillor Janet Battye, Westmorland and Furness Council Cabinet Member for Children's Services, said:

"We want to ensure that every family who is entitled to support receives it. The expansion of Free School Meal eligibility means that many more families, including those who are working and receiving Universal Credit, may now qualify. I encourage anyone who thinks they may be eligible to check and apply. Registering for Free School Meals not only helps families with the cost of school meals but can also unlock additional support and funding for schools. You can also pop into any of our Family Hubs and ask for help and information from our friendly teams."

Applications can be made online through the Westmorland and Furness Council website and typically take only a few minutes to complete.

Hello,

A temporary road closure has been put in place to allow Westmorland and Furness Highways to carry out highway works which are expected to commence 7th September 2026 and anticipated to take 3 weeks to complete.

Location: Scaur Close, Lazonby, from its junction with Scaur Lane, extending in a north easterly direction for its entire length.

There is no suitable alternative route available for vehicles. A way for pedestrians and dismounted cyclists will be maintained at all times.

N.B Passage for Emergency Vehicles will be maintained where required for the duration of this restriction.

Westmorland and Furness Council will be hosting an engagement event in Lazonby Village Hall on the 13th July with two sessions from 12:00 - 13:00 and 17:00 - 18:00 with colleagues from the Environment Agency, Cumbria CVS and Eden Rivers Trust to support.

The purpose of this event is to:
Help residents understand how the Council manages local flood risk
What the Local Lead Flood Authority, riparian owner, property owner and other risk management authority's responsibilities are
Explain how the Council works with other organisations
Clarify the reporting process - how best and who to report flood events to.

There will be an open Q&A to share local views and ask any questions.

We would encourage residents to come along to the engagement event so we can hear their concerns and hopefully answer any questions they may have.

Letters will be posted next week to properties within known areas of risk inviting them to the event, but it is an open event to all residents.

Following this session, officers will be clarifying and collating all the data received from the flooding questionnaires and any additional information received from the event and finalising the Section 19 report covering the November 2025 flooding event.
