You should see the other guys… 🤕😱

This little egret was brought into the centre after a brawl with a murder of crows 🤕💔

He arrived looking battered and bruised, with some nasty puncture wounds from the crows’ beaks 🫯

His injuries were severe, and we were unsure if he’d pull through.

But the vets got straight to work tending to his wounds. And after extensive care and a few days of rest, our feathery little fighter had improved in leaps and bounds!

He’s now been released back into the wild, where he will hopefully avoid any further corvid encounters.

He is unlikely to survive. 💔

This poor stoat was rushed to WAF after suffering a dangerous encounter with a cat.

Arriving with severe puncture wounds to his neck, he was in extremely poor condition; weak, cold and in need of urgent care.

Thankfully, our dedicated team were there to give him the treatment he desperately needed to feel comfortable.

Every year, we see a countless number of patients arrive at our doors as a result of cat related incidents. In the UK, it is estimated over 200 million wild animals suffer from these attacks. Something that is extremely avoidable.

While predation is a natural behaviour for cats, there are simple ways we can help reduce its impact on wildlife. Fitting cats with a breakaway collar and bell can provide birds and other small animals with an early warning, giving them a greater chance of escaping safely.

For this little stoat, his prognosis is tremendously guarded as he remains in urgent care. ❤️‍🩹

HISTORY HAS BEEN MADE! 🎉

For the first time ever at WAF, we’ve welcomed a fledgling red kite! 🔴🪁

After taking a tumble from the nest, this grumpy-looking fluffball was found hiding in a bush, in a pretty sorrowful state.

Abandoned and covered in ticks, the youngster was, initially, taken to a local vet before being transferred to WAF for specialist care. Our vet team, not in the least fooled by her playing dead, examined her and carefully removed TEN ticks from around her eyes.

This beautiful young bird is now safe in WAF’s care, stable, comfortable, and being closely monitored as she continues her recovery.

The red kite is one of the UK’s most incredible conservation success stories. By 1990, only a tiny population remained in the UK, and a reintroduction programme began with just 13 birds released in the Chilterns.

Today, there are an estimated 5,000–6,000 breeding pairs across the UK, an incredible recovery that has seen their numbers soar by around 46,000%! 🙌

This tiny badger cub was starving, dehydrated, and all alone 💔

3 month old ‘Siân’ was brought to us by a kind member of the public after being found in a heartbreaking state.

She was cold, weak, and pretty unresponsive; we weren’t sure she’d make it through the night.

Our veterinary team did everything they could to help, and all we could do was wait.

The next morning, we were relieved to see a little spark return. Siân was much brighter and even showed an interest in food although she did mistake one of our vet’s fingers for a snack!

But her recovery wasn’t over yet.

Our team discovered a painful infection in her left ear, which they treated straight away. Alongside this, she received fluids to rehydrate her and plenty of food to help build her strength back up. 🦡

Thanks to the care and dedication of our vets, Siân is now recovering well and getting stronger every day 💚

They were found ORPHANED and ALONE. 💔

This beautiful pair were found stranded, fallen from their nest.

With no mum in sight and being so young and in such a vulnerable position, they were brought to the safety of WAF.

Arriving as two tiny squabs, the pair were given food, warmth and placed together for the comfort of one another.

These guys have been with us for a few weeks, now, receiving round-the-clock care from our fantastic team, and just look at how much they have grown!

From tiny squabs to fully-grown, gorgeous pigeons that will soon be able to spread their wings in the wild!

They really do make a stunning pair. ✨

Did you know… Pigeons are incredibly smart and have the capacity to recognise human faces. An interesting experiment, carried out in 1995, also demonstrated their ability to distinguish different art styles, as they were able to categorise the works of Monet and Picasso with 90% accuracy… making them surprisingly qualified art critics! 🎨

This male roe deer was going crazy!

This week, Louis was called out to rescue a male roe deer trapped in netting.

With no other rescuers available, he attended the scene alone. The deer was stressed and thrashing in the netting, making it an incredibly dangerous situation for both the animal and the rescuer.

But Louis’s experience shone through. He managed to tackle the frantic deer and safely remove the netting.
Using his Raptor shears, he cut through the last of the netting, and the deer was finally free.

Louis then directed him away from the hazard and was delighted to watch him bound off into the trees.

A brilliant rescue with a heartwarming outcome.

Our first little owlet of the year 💔

This poor little feather ball was knocked out of his nest in this week's wind and rain.

He was found all alone on the forest floor. We don't know how long he had been there, but when we found him, he was cold, injured, and exhausted.

He was rushed back to Wildlife Aid, but when the vets examined him they quickly discovered devastating injuries.

As a result of his fall from the tree, both of his eyes were severely damaged. He was effectively blind.

Tragically, his injuries were too severe for him to recover.

We were heartbroken not to be able to do more for this fragile little creature.

Bad weather at this time of year can spell disaster for fledgling birds. This little owl was just weeks away from adulthood but was caught out by the storm.

When you're out and about, keep an eye on the ground beneath bushes and trees for injured owlets. If you spot one, you might just save a life. ❤️🦉

Baby rabbits covered in mud!

Brought to us by a kind member of the public, this group of kits arrived an unusual colour, covered in a thick sludge. Not ideal.

Having been found stranded in a flooded garden, the little kits received a much-needed clean and a thorough check-up from our fantastic vet team, upon their arrival at the centre. 🥰

For now, these little ones are safe and warm in the care of one of our dedicated home carers, where they’re recovering their strength and getting ready for a second chance at life back in the wild. 🌱

It was exactly 2 years ago, today, that Simon laid down his grasper and crossed the Rainbow Bridge.

Lou and Louis have been reflecting on rescues gone by; Simon and Louis worked together on many, many rescues, over the years, and we think he would very much approve of his old pal, Louis, joining the WAF family.

We are thankful, every day, for the years of dedication that Simon poured into WAF, and feel privileged to be continuing his legacy.
