Herefordshire Council’s Community Protection team has supported a major multi-agency day of action targeting rural crime and environmental offences in south Herefordshire.

The operation, led by West Mercia Police and carried out in and around Ross-on-Wye, brought together a range of partner agencies to tackle offences affecting rural communities, motorists, businesses and the environment.

Council officers worked alongside police, HMRC, Gloucestershire Police and other specialist agencies as part of coordinated enforcement activity focusing on vehicle-related offences, waste crime, animal welfare and wider regulatory breaches.

During the operation, Herefordshire Council officers from the Community Protection team carried out checks linked to waste carriers, food safety and livestock transportation. Enforcement action included:

• A £300 fixed penalty notice issued for a waste carrier offence.

• A formal warning issued to a livestock carrier for offences relating to the recording of cattle movements.

The wider operation also resulted in:

• One arrest for suspected drug-driving offences.

• Two vehicles seized for having no insurance.

• 13 drivers reported or processed for traffic offences, including no insurance, vehicle defects, expired MOTs and overloaded vehicles or trailers.

• A £530 HMRC fine issued for illegal red diesel use.

Officers also visited farms across Herefordshire to provide crime prevention advice and distribute security equipment, including padlock kits and SmartWater property-marking kits. Additional engagement activity included road safety checks, community speed enforcement and bike-marking events in local communities.

PRESS RELEASE

LEDBURY TOWN COUNCIL EXPLORES TRANSFER OF SEVEN PLAY AREAS

At its Annual Council Meeting, Members also approved the submission of formal expressions of interest to Herefordshire Council in the possible Community Asset Transfer (CAT) of seven play areas within Ledbury from Herefordshire Council to Ledbury Town Council.

• Browning Road
• Kemply Brook
• Prince Rupert Road
• Yeomans Close
• John Lee Road
• Deer Park, Villa Way
• Childer Road

Whilst not formally committing the council yet to this course of action, this represents the next stage in exploring proposed transfer arrangements.

The Chairman emphasised that careful consideration will continue to be given to the financial, operational and resource implications associated with taking on the ownership, long-term management and maintenance of these play areas.

Members recognised the importance of investing in and maintaining high quality play provision for local residents and families and remain keen to explore the potential transfer as a means of safeguarding these valued community assets for Ledbury residents.

The Chairman commented:
“Herefordshire Council has the stated ambition of creating a “Child Friendly Herefordshire” and yet funding constraints put at risk the county council’s ability to maintain and improve these play spaces around the town.

The Town Council continues to expand its investment in supporting young people and has a long track record of improving play facilities at the Recreation Ground. It’s only right that we now fully consider stepping forward to secure the future of other play spaces in our town for the benefit of our youngest residents.”

Any final proposals would be subject to further detailed consideration by the Council before completion of the Community Asset Transfer process.

Making libraries even better - public consultation seeks views on Herefordshire’s library services

Residents across Herefordshire are being asked to shape on how the county’s library services can continue to evolve and serve local people’s needs in many different ways. A new public consultation on library services has been launched by Herefordshire Council - assessing what people value most highly now and what they would like to see developed in the future.

The short survey runs until Wednesday 20 May 2026 and is looking to gather views from both library users and people who don’t use them on how services should develop in the future. It covers how library services can evolve to meet changing needs and expectations, ensuring they remain relevant, inclusive and responsive to communities across Herefordshire.

Libraries continue to play an important role at the heart of local communities, offering access not only to books and information, but also to digital services, learning opportunities and welcoming spaces for people to connect.

The survey also looks at current activities delivered in libraries which not everyone may be aware of, in addition to the well-known function of providing access to books, including to borrow, and information. Current activities also include practical support in reading and literacy for people of all ages, helping people use computers and the internet, and providing a safe and welcoming place to spend time for people and often helping tackle social isolation. Projects in the county’s libraries help people into work and to develop new skills and learning, promote and support better health and wellbeing, and bring people together for a huge variety of events and activities.

People are being asked what they value most about libraries now, what role they think libraries should play in the future, and services or support they would like to see developed. This includes views on how libraries can continue to support learning, digital inclusion, access to information and community life in general.

The feedback and insight will be central to shaping how library services are delivered over the next three years.

People can complete the survey online here: https://www.herefordshire.gov.uk/consultations/may/libraries-residents-consultation/

Or pick up a paper copy at any Herefordshire library. All responses are confidential and anonymous.

Have your say on how library services are delivered over the next three years.
