West Yorkshire Trading Standards are supporting World No To***co Day 2026 🌍

According to the World Health Organisation WHO, at least 40 million children aged 13–15 globally report current use of at least one to***co product.

Of these, 20 million smoke ci******es and 10 million use smokeless (oral/nasal) to***co.

At least 15 million adolescents aged 13–15 years are already using e-ci******es, and in countries with data, children are on average nine times more likely than adults to v**e.

While we are concerned mainly with stopping the trade of illegal to***co, we know that ALL smoking is extremely damaging to a person’s health.

You can report concerns about a business selling to***co products including v**es to children via the Citizens Advice Consumer helpline on 0808 223 1133. If you have any information about illegal to***co sales, we want to know about it.

This webinar, aimed at anyone working with communities in West Yorkshire, will cover:

On Tuesday the 26/05/2026 the West Yorkshire Trading Standards Public Health Team carried out inspections at Local businesses in Brighouse and Halifax disrupting the sale and supply of illegal ci******es, hand rolling to***co, v**es and other illicit items.

This is a powerful demonstration of multiple agencies working together to tackle illegal activity, while protecting public health and supporting legitimate businesses in West Yorkshire.

Total amount of illicit goods seized was around– 417 x 20 packets of ci******es, 197 x 50g of Hand Rolling To***co, 763 Vapes and other illegal items.

The genuine retail value of the items seized is around - £21,326.00.

Tackling the supply of illegal to***co and v**es remains a high priority, as these products are often sold cheaply and without proper checks, and the sellers are unlikely to care who they sell them to, making them easily accessible to children.

If you have information about a business near you selling illegal goods, you can report to West Yorkshire Trading Standards via the Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline on 0808 223 1133.

On Monday the 18/05/2026 The West Yorkshire Trading Standards Public Health Team were out conducting inspections at Local businesses in Heckmondwike and Dewsbury.

With help from partner agencies the team conducted targeted collaborative enforcement activity at several businesses disrupting the sale and supply of illegal ci******es, hand rolling to***co and v**es.

The amount of illicit goods seized was over 906 x 20 packets of ci******es, 188 x 50g of Hand Rolling To***co and 374 illegal v**es.

The genuine retail value of the items seized is around £29,300.

Combatting the supply of illegal to***co and v**es is a high priority, as they are often sold at cheaper prices and the sellers are unlikely to care who they sell them to, making them easily accessible to children.

Today WY Joint Services is celebrating “World Metrology Day” which is the annual commemoration of the signing of the Metre Convention on the 20 May 1875 by representatives from seventeen nations.

This year’s theme centres on building trust in policy making. Measurement underpins informed decision making, from trade and innovation to public health and new technology. Reliable measurement enables an evidence base on which sound policy and public trust can depend.

“Metrology” is the scientific study of measurement and is divided into three basic overlapping activities:

⚖ The definition of units of measurement
📏 The realisation of these units of measurement in practice
🔎 Traceability - linking measurements made in practice to the reference standards.

The UK like other countries has a National Measurement System which comprises of a network of laboratories, calibration facilities and accreditation bodies which implement and maintain its metrology infrastructure.

through its work in its Calibration Services Team contribute to this national measurement system, actively supporting local business through its weights and measures calibrations, verifications, and enforcement activities.

Our activities provide businesses with traceability to national standards, check compliance of weighing or measuring equipment being used for trade, and importantly help contribute to the protection of the public from short measure goods.

Consumers wishing to report short measure goods, or concerns regarding inaccurate weighing or measuring equipment, can do so by calling the Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline on 0808 223 1133.

By reporting sales of cheap and illegal to***co, you’re helping to keep serious crime out of your local area and protecting young people from addiction to ci******es and v**es.

The illicit to***co trade has links to modern day slavery, human trafficking and child exploitation. It is not a victimless crime!

Those selling illegal to***co and v**es don’t care who they sell to. They are happy to flout laws designed to protect under 18s from ni****ne addiction.

Don’t tolerate this sort of crime in your neighbourhood!
