Rogue Traders like to throw a few tricks at your door - offering 'limited time discounts' or 'OAP reductions' to already inflated prices for home improvement works and jobs.

Be aware of Rogue Traders operating in your neighbourhood, and if in doubt - shut them out! 🚪

☠ Never feel pressured into agreeing to a service on your doorstep

✅ Stop..... take 5 and think about the offer. If it seems too good to be true then it usually is!

👻 Ask for contact details for the trader and contact them when you are ready, ideally after you have obtained a few more quotes to compare.

Check before you buy fireworks to make sure they are safe and legal.

🎆 Check you are buying from a licenced premises and not from someone selling them in the street, or from online social media platforms or from the back of a van. You have no assurance that the fireworks have been stored properly and are legitimate safe products.

🎆 Check that the fireworks are marked with BS EN 15947 and a CE Mark or UK CA Mark on the packaging, and read the instructions carefully.

🎆 Check that fireworks do not get into the hands of children - store fireworks safely and out of reach of children and young people.

If you are considering purchasing fireworks, make sure you check before you buy.

💥 Only buy fireworks from a licensed retailer - do not be tempted to buy discounted fireworks from an unlicensed online seller, via social media or an unlicensed shop

💥 Always check for safety instructions on the packaging of fireworks. Never buy fireworks that have been separated from the original packaging.

💥 Look for safety markings CE / UKCA and BS EN15947

✅ It is an offence to set off fireworks in a public place.
✅ It is an offence to let fireworks off between 11pm and 7am except on 5th November when the cut off is midnight

Parents and carers are encouraged to speak with young people about the dangers and consequences of misusing fireworks.

On the day that fireworks legally go on sale, West Yorkshire Trading Standards is reminding traders of their responsibilities to ensure they are supplying safe fireworks and are adhering to the law by only selling adult fireworks* to people aged 18 or over.

As well as being a time for fun and celebrations, firework season can often encourage incidents of antisocial behaviour which can cause concern and in extreme cases, fear for vulnerable residents.

Some traders can sell fireworks throughout the whole year; to do this they must have an all-year-round licence. There are strict rules in place to ensure that certain fireworks can only be sold in accordance with the correct licence and most licences restrict firework sales, only allowing them to be sold between the 15th of October and 10th of November.

Traders caught breaching the law can be fined up to £5,000 and imprisoned for up to six months for selling or using fireworks illegally.

advises that:

🎇 Only purchase fireworks from licenced premises and do not be tempted to buy fireworks from someone who is selling them in the street, from online social media platforms or from the back of a van etc.

On the run up to Bonfire Night, West Yorkshire Trading Standards are encouraging members of the public to report any firework related concerns, in particular those traders who are selling unsafe or banned fireworks or selling to children.

Officers will be partnering with and to tackle any rogue sellers including those selling to children, with the aim of ensuring residents have a safe fireworks season.

On 12 October 2026, Muhammad Zubair Khan, the director of DV News Ltd appeared at Bradford Crown Court, having pleaded guilty to offences under the To***co and Related Products Regulations 2016, The Ni****ne Inhaling Products (Age of Sale and Proxy Purchasing) Regulations 2015 and the Children and Families Act 2014.

Mr Khan was sentenced to 8 months imprisonment, suspended for 2 years and ordered to pay fines totalling £8,000, to be paid in 6 months.
DV News Ltd was fined a total of £17,000 to be paid in 6 months.

In addition, confiscation orders were made against both Mr Khan and DV News. They were found to have a shared benefit from offending of £141,966.69 and Mr Khan was deemed to have benefited from an additional £89,051.47. Based on the assets available, a confiscation order was made against Mr Khan of £79,740.13 and against DV News of £75,168.09.

In January 2024 officers from West Yorkshire Trading Standards visited v**e shops Daniels and DV Vapes, both located on The Headrow in Leeds City Centre, and both run by the company, following complaints being received about the sale of illicit disposable E-ci******es and the sale of E-ci******es to children.

During the visits, a total of 15,522 illicit disposable E-ci******es, with a retail value of around £155,000, were discovered and seized by officers. The disposable electronic ci******es had a tank capacity that was in excess of the 2ml limit prescribed by the Regulations.

In April 2024, a 13-year-old volunteer entered Daniels, under the supervision of a Trading Standards Officer and asked to buy a v**e. The seller sold a Strawberry Ice Elf Bar disposable e-cigarette to the volunteer for £5.00, without asking for identification or challenging their age.

Fireworks are dangerous in the wrong hands and they carry an age restriction to prevent harm. Businesses are responsible for conducting age verification checks and complying with the strict rules that are in place to ensure that fireworks are sold safely.
