Hamara Healthy Living Centre

Hamara Healthy Living Centre ‘Hamara’ means yours and mine - ‘Ours’. Pop in for a visit, grab a coffee and chat with our friendly Team.

We provide services for older people, learning disabilities and young people, alongside education and advocacy support, with a Gym and Café. 🖤 From its humble beginnings in a small office with 2 part time staff working solely on one project (Elders Project), Hamara has grown to be the largest ethnic minority organisation in the voluntary and community sector in Leeds. Based in a purpose developed

£1.2 million centre in Beeston, Hamara stands out as a beacon within the community and voluntary sector and its success has inspired many other organisations to emulate its achievements. Working primarily (but not exclusively) with the South Asian community and now employing over 20 staff, Hamara currently deliver several different strands of work. Information and Advice, Health Promotion / Education, Older People’s Services, Learning Disabilities, Women’s Activities, Sports and Exercise, Youth Services, Community Cohesion and Training Programmes are all key facets of its work. The organisation is regarded as a model of good practice both within its sector and by many statutory agencies in Leeds – a fact verified by the contracts it has been awarded by Leeds City Council, NHS Leeds and Social Services to name a few of the many partners Hamara currently works with. Its strategic aim of becoming the key player within the sector in the community in Leeds has been considerably enhanced by the merger with both the Milun Centre and Hooner Kelah over the past year. These two well established community organisations which have been serving the community for over twenty years now form part of the ever expanding Hamara Group and the organisation has no intention of resting on its laurels. Hamara is an urdu term meaning ‘OURS’ which reflects the community involvement in the planning and development of the project.

This morning’s breakfast was simple - fresh bread, jam, a cup of tea with good company. ❤️

Seventeen years ago we came together as many years ago and all these years later we’re still sharing laughs, memories, and friendship around the table. Time may have flown by, but the bond we’ve built remains as strong as ever.

It’s not the fancy meals that matter most, but the friendships that have stood the test of time. Here’s to 17 years of support, fun, and countless shared moments, and to many more breakfasts together. 🥖🍓☕

What a fantastic time we’re having in our sewing group! 🧵✂️

The group is in full swing, with so many lovely members coming together to share ideas, skills, and inspiration. From beautiful dressmaking projects to handmade clothes, it’s amazing to see everyone’s creativity shining through.

But it’s not just about sewing -it’s about friendship, encouragement, laughter, and supporting one another along the way. Whether you’re an experienced dressmaker or just starting your sewing journey, there’s always something new to learn and wonderful people to meet.

Thank you to everyone who makes our group such a welcoming, friendly, and inspiring place. We can’t wait to see what beautiful creations come off the sewing machines next!

🍗🥗 Balanced plate or not? You tell us! 👀

This meal is bringing the goods with plenty of protein from the chicken and a nice dose of fibre from the fresh salad. 💪🌱

If we were being picky, adding a small portion of carbs (think sweet potato, brown rice, or wholemeal pitta) and a healthy fat like avocado or olive oil would make it even more balanced.

✨ Fun facts:
💪 Protein helps keep you feeling fuller for longer.
🌱 Fibre keeps your gut happy and your digestion moving smoothly.
🔥 Your body actually burns more calories digesting protein than it does digesting carbs or fats!

So, what's your verdict - balanced enough, or would you add something to this plate? 👇😊🍽️

Hamara spent a couple of days at the annual GSK IMPACT Awards event hosted by The King’s Fund.

As a previous GSK IMPACT Awards winner, we are proud to remain part of a network of inspiring organisations and leaders tackling health inequalities and strengthening communities across the country.

This year’s ceremony was a powerful reminder of the impact being made nationwide, and we were delighted to celebrate the newest award winners joining the network.

The event was a great opportunity to connect, share ideas, and reflect on the work being done to build healthier, stronger communities. We return inspired and energised with new insights to bring back to our team and the communities we serve.

Congratulations again to all of this year’s winners, we look forward to continuing the journey together!
