Many, many congratulations to one of the newest members of our Ship’s Company, Leading Naval Nurse Sophie, who has recently completed her confirmation course at HMS Raleigh.

Sophie passed out last weekend and she was presented with her “hooks” by our Commanding Officer.

She gave us the following insight into her journey so far in the Maritime Reserves:

“I joined the Royal Naval Reserve to develop my knowledge and skills alongside like-minded people who share the same core values.

“I am currently training as an Advanced Clinical Practitioner in Urgent and Emergency Care with a nursing background and I feel my civilian career aligns closely with naval values, particularly teamwork, commitment, discipline and resilience.”

Sophie was appointed as Deputy Class Leader during the course. This is a key position of responsibility at such an early stage, supporting her recruit colleagues through the demanding INT course.

As a result of her efforts, she won the Captain’s Prize during that course, which she is deservedly proud of.

The Reserves is a team sport, and this also reflects well on the team at HMS Ceres, who worked hard behind the scenes to prepare her for the course.

She added that: “The people I have met throughout the RNR have been amazing and made my experience incredibly rewarding.

“Adapting to the military way of working pushed me outside my comfort zone as I am not from a military background. However, through discipline and commitment, I am learning to overcome these challenges and have thrown myself headfirst into every opportunity. I look forward to continuing my development and contributing my clinical skills and leadership experience to the Naval Reserve.”

Well done to you Sophie and to team Ceres and the wider initial naval training group in the Maritime Reserves, for doing such a great job of preparing our people to the unique demands and challenges of Naval Service, whilst also managing a challenging full time role. Everyone in the unit is proud of you and your achievements!

A joint team from HMS Ceres and Yorkshire Universities Royal Naval Unit represented the Royal Navy at an engagement event at Wakefield Trinity earlier this week.

Events like this are a great way of showcasing the work that the Royal Navy does within our community. As the local units the area we always enjoy meeting the public and talking about our work. They’re also a brilliant opportunity for the two units to work together.

During the event, four local companies signed the Armed Forces Covenant and there was also a great brief by the RN presentation team.

As ever, there was also a very warm welcome from local council members. Thanks to everyone who worked hard behind the scenes to make this event happen and to everyone who took the time to engage with us!

A huge thank you to all those involved in this weekend’s Cadet Experience Event. We had a great delivering fun and engaging activities to the Sea Cadets and Combined Cadet Force.

This quote from one of our experienced Senior Rates at HMS Ceres says it all… “As I come to latter part of my career, these weekends are very rewarding passing on something to the cadets, who are the future of our community. Great team work from everyone involved!”

Thanks to everyone who participated, and also to the Cadet Force staff who do so much in their own time to encourage and support your people in our community!

Thank you to The West Yorkshire Veterans Breakfast Club for hosting our reservists at the Pride of Shipley Club on Sunday morning. It was a great chance for us to meet and connect with the community that we serve.

We enjoyed spending time with the veterans and sharing their experience. We can learn a lot from them and it’s great to have their support.

The veterans club provides a space where veterans can connect with others who understand military life.

Thank you for the kind invite and we appreciate the hospitality shown by our hosts at the Pride of Shipley.

Sheona’s grandfather, who was a great supporter of her Royal Navy career, unfortunately passed away earlier this year, so she wore an appropriately themed running outfit in his memory to raise funds for charity.
