Some more photos and an interview with Mark Grandfield, LJHA CEO, following our 'Landlord of the Year' award at last week's Northern Housing Awards.

LJHA won the title based on the judges being “deeply impressed by their commitment to community, inclusivity and tenant wellbeing. Their resident-centred approach, innovative support services and strong partnerships demonstrated a landlord genuinely focused on improving lives and supporting independence across its communities”.

In the current political climate, community tensions are running high which can make individuals and communities feel unsafe. These challenges can feel out of our control, but housing can play an important role in managing the impact of external events on residents to ensure they have spaces that fe...

Leeds Jewish Housing Association are saddened at the passing of Jean Hersh, one of our most well-loved residents and wife of our dear Arek.

Jean was a woman who supported Arek in sharing his memories of the Holocaust, as well as those of other Holocaust survivors. She also highlighted the importance of passing the beacon of memory on to future generations.

Jean also had a wonderful sense of humour, appreciating the joy and laughter of life.

She was an inspiration to all ages and she will be missed by everyone who knew her.

May her memory be a blessing 🕯️

This yellow candle has been lit in the Stonegate Way lounge on behalf of everyone at LJHA in memory of Fani Greenbaum of Nyirmedgyes, Hungary, who was murdered at Auschwitz in 1944, aged 76.

Yesterday evening, members of LJHA attended the community's Yom Ha'Shoah commemoration, where we heard the story of Trude Silman, one of our residents. Fellow LJHA residents, Arek Hersh and Leisel Carter, were also in attendance as we were reminded about the importance of passing their stories to future generations.

A story with a lovely ending.

Last year, as many people will be aware, Suzanne Ripton who was a resident in Stonegate Way and a Holocaust survivor, sadly passed away. Her funeral was a natural, ‘green’ funeral – she was buried underneath a favourite tree.

Her son gave us some bags of daffodil and hyacinth bulbs, which he had hoped to plant where she was buried, but the soil wasn’t suitable for this. These were given to the Skyte House and Sheila Saunders Lawn gardening team, and we saw the flowers in bloom this week.

This is a wonderful memorial to Suzanne, who is pictured fourth from the left in this Holocaust Survivors Friendship Association photo from several years ago. The Skyte House and Sheila Saunders Lawn garden is behind them in this photo.

Thank you to everyone who attended the first of our self-defence and empowerment session held on Sunday. Thank you to Maddie and Amelia from Blossom for leading the session.

The session formed part of our ‘Be Well and Be Strong’ Project to develop creative and empowering solutions to make women and girls feel confident in dealing domestic abuse and harassment. The project is funded by the Mayor of West Yorkshire's Safer Communities Fund as well as Leeds City Council's Inner North East Community Committee.

One participant said:

"I just wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed Blossom Self Defence today! I felt so empowered and cared about.

I thought I would feel triggered and scared (due to my childhood trauma) but I left feeling safe and like I could protect myself if I were to be attacked. I also felt like I was a part of a community. Unfortunately violence against women and girls had probably happened to everyone in the room, and although this is so sad it has also brought us closer together.

I am so grateful that you organised this, so thankyou 🙂 If you ever get chance to organise another one, please message me as I would love to go to it again and further develop my skills as well as refresh the skills I learnt today.

The details of the next session will be promoted in due course".

On Wednesday 18th February, we will be making some changes to our telephone switchboard system.

This will mean that for a maximum of 30 minutes at some point between 10am and 1pm, incoming calls won't be connected. We apologise in advance for any inconvenience.

You can still WhatsApp and e-mail us as normal.

Thank you

Wishing everyone a Shabbat Shalom ✡️💜🥰
