Diabetes Teddy Bear Clinic is Paw-some! 🐾

Our Diabetes Team recently held their annual Teddy Bear Clinic, supporting patients to learn about their diabetes in a playful way.

Patients took their teddy bears on a journey around the Diabetes Centre showing them finger pricks, injections, blood tests and more! The Teddy Bear Clinic gives patients the opportunity to learn about living with diabetes without the pressure of talking about their own diagnosis.

One parent said:

'Honestly this is an incredible experience for the Type 1 littles. The atmosphere is so warm and welcoming for a start... Teaching children about their Type 1 diagnosis is so important but through this event information was shared in a balanced and age appropriate way - something that we (parents of a 5-year-old) find so hard to do.'

Activities included food chopping races, 'emotion twister', sensory room and one or two unusual costumes... Staff, patients and families all had a blast.

'Before I had my chemotherapy at home, I had to go into hospital three times a month. I missed so much school and got far behind and my mum had to miss work' - Isla, aged 13.

Isla is one of many Leeds Children's Hospital patients across Yorkshire who are now able to receive their chemotherapy at home, known as ‘in-home bolus chemotherapy’.

For eligible patients, this means choosing to have their chemotherapy in the comfort of their own home, rather than travelling to hospital.

Isla said:

'When my in-home chemotherapy nurse Neil is here, it’s just a five minute ‘push’ dose of chemo medication. Neil has made my life so much easier in so many ways. I have started going back to school, dancing, and seeing my friends. I am starting to finally feel normal for once.'

Initially developed during the pandemic, charity partners Candlelighters funded a two-year pilot of our in-home chemotherapy service. Following the huge success of the trial, the service will now be offered permanently, providing care closer to home for children and young people with cancer across Yorkshire.

Dr Sue Picton (Consultant Paediatric and Adolescent Oncologist) said:

‘This was the first role of this kind, putting Leeds Children’s Hospital on the map as a trailblazer for this innovative service. We are delighted to be making this service part of our business as usual and available for patients in the future. It’s a fantastic example of how clinicians and charities can work together to improve care for patients, putting families first’

Grace and Jon have made it to Oslo! 🇳🇴 🚴🚴‍♀️

Over the weekend our colleagues Grace and Jon completed their remarkable cycle from Leeds Children's Hospital to Oslo in Norway.

Cardiac Nurse Specialist Grace and Neonatal Doctor Jon completed the 1700mile cycle in memory of their son Zachary, raising funds for Martin House Children's Hospice.

This week our Play Team received a generous donation of Eid gifts for patients in hospital donated by Mount Pleasant Scouts and Madressah Islamiyah in Batley.

Hospital Play Specialists Lucy and Laura were there to receive the donation along with Muslim Chaplain Fazeela Hassan.

✨ Meet our Piano Volunteers this Volunteers’ Week! ✨

It’s Volunteers’ Week, and we’re celebrating the incredible people who give their time to make a difference across Leeds Children's Hospital.

Leeds Hospitals Charity Piano volunteers like Wandy and Jenny donate their time and skills to play beautiful live piano music in our busy reception area. Music helps patients, families and staff feel more relaxed on their way to and from appointments.

Wandy said:

'Volunteering is very rewarding. You see lots of smiling faces and children ask me to play songs which is always nice. You can see how music lifts the mood of patients and hospital staff. It's also a great way to raise funds for Leeds Hospitals Charity'

The Health Equity Hub is open!

If you're visiting Leeds Children's Hospital this morning you might see our Pop-Up Health Equity Hub in Clarendon Wing Reception, we'd love you to call in!

Colleagues and health-care partners from across the city are ready and waiting with stalls offering free advice and support to help families address health inequalities.

Health inequalities are the unfair and avoidable differences in health experienced across populations. Inequalities arise from the conditions in which people are born, grow, live, and work. We recognise that such disparities have a direct impact on our services, influencing individuals’ need for healthcare, their ability to access services, and their health outcomes.

We provide care for some of the most vulnerable children and families in Yorkshire and beyond making it essential that we do what we can to address these challenges.

Today's event includes free, expert advice for families on:
🦷 Dental care – including how to access free children's dental services
💷 Money management – financial advice and guidance patients and families
🚬 Smoking and va**ng – information on support services across the city
🥦 Healthy eating – advice on nutrition, lifestyle choices, and developing healthy habits
🏡 Housing support – guidance on issues such as damp and mould, and support services across Leeds

Today's event is part of a much bigger plan to to achieve a healthier, more equitable Leeds, where all children and families have fair access to the support and resources they need to improve their health and wellbeing.

Please call in to see the team if you're passing though the hospital this morning. Stalls are open until 12 o'clock.

Faye Bishop - Hospital Youth Worker in our the Diabetes Service - was recently invited to Buckingham Palace in recognition of her work supporting young people.

Faye leads the delivery of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award for young people with health conditions at Leeds Children's Hospital. The team delivers Bronze, Silver and Gold awards and is the only hospital-based Youth Work team to deliver the award.

As The Duke of Edinburgh's Award celebrates its 70th anniversary, Faye said she is proud to represent the service and the opportunities that access to the award creates for young people:

'... the dedication of the fantastic team around me, alongside the resilience and determination shown by the young people we support, has made every challenge worthwhile... This invitation to the palace is recognition for the whole team and every young person I have had the privilege to support throughout this journey'

Congratulations to Faye and the whole team who make the DofE Award possible at Leeds Children's Hospital.
