The Space Project

The Space Project Free education space in Leeds run by Really Open University All are invited to participate in this project with us to make a self-managed space.

The Space Project is a new project in Leeds city centre hosted by Really Open University to reimagine education. After two years holding events around Leeds discussing and putting into practice an education that runs against the status quo of the university, we now present a six month space that brings groups and individuals together to take education out of the university and make it accessible t

o all. We aim to create a radical free education that can challenge barriers to learning we face everyday and to create a new kind of education in which academia and learning are open to all and we can teach and learn collectively. We welcome a variety or formats and subjects to be included in the space, including discussions, film showings, seminars, talks, workshops, reading groups, archives, enquiries and more. Check our updates and calendar for upcoming events. If you have something you think could be held in the space or want to know more then get in contact.

7th Feb – 7pm. TOMORROW
"What we got for £850 billion: finance and its functions" David Harvie.

The second lecture, focusing on financial institutions and the technicalities (in everyday language) of the financial markets. How do they work? What does the jargon mean? Why did the British state commit £850 billion to bailing out the banks and why is finance so essential to neoliberal capitalism.

Starting tomorrow The Space Project will be open every Thursday 4-7.30 for people to use Leeds Radical Library. This will be just before the New Weapons reading group so its a great time to come and explore some of the recommended reading before the sessions.

Hope you all enjoyed November 30th strikes, pickets and demos. The
political climate might be hotting up but the weather's growing cooler
and we've whacked the heating up at The Space Project. Although
knowing that every 1% increase in energy bills plunges another 40,000
homes into fuel poverty disinclines us to contribute to the massive.. profits of the energy companies. That's why we're going to Fuel
Poverty Campaign Plotting today, Sunday 4th at 1pm at The Space
Project.

You won't need your coat on for the evening though as it'll be feisty
enough with extraordinary folk songs of ordinary folk by Ewan McLennan
and friends Jimmy Connell and others. Bring pennies for the door and
the bar and bring your songs. 8pm, arrive prompt, it might get packed.

If we had accomodation (but we don't) you might as well stay over
because the week is busy too. Monday 5th at 7.30pm is Plan C for
Leeds: strategy discussions on how are we to go beyond the current
movements and create political coherence without dogma?

If these revolutionary times remind you of another, maybe come down
Tuesday to revisit 1968 with "Medium Cool" the latest offerings from
Militant Cinema, again at 7.30pm. A 60s counter culture classic that
is part film, part documentary and famously contains scenes shot
amidst the actual riots surrounding the Convention.

Weds 7th is the Leeds Surrealist Group's third journal launch
"Phosphor" on the theme of "Memory Reclaimed". 7.30pm, and including a
special screening of the latest Jan Svankmayer's film "Surviving Life:
Theory and Practice".

You can keep your slippers on Thursday but back out Friday 9th for a
Calais Info Talk by No Borders at 7.30.

All this at The Space Project, 37-38 Mabgate Green.
See www.spaceproject.org.uk for more details
and email [email protected] for praise, criticism,
detail, collaboration or to put on your own events.
See you up the front!

Welcome to the first weekly digest telling you about upcoming events at The Space Project! Of course, do still check the website on www.spaceproject.org.uk in case events are changed or cancelled.

First up this week is the Open House meeting TONIGHT Monday 21st at 8pm. This is a chance to promote your events and projects, find out more about us and what we're doing, and have an agreeable time hanging out chatting. There's been some time confusion over this and you may have seen 6.30 but that's our business meeting. Oops.

Militant Cinema follows up the next day, Tuesday 22nd at 7.30pm. Militant Cinema is now a regular event at The Space Project and will be showing Omricon, which is a light hearted parody of the capitalist system.

Wednesday is an early start at 5.30 for the Reimagine Education Reading Group. This is the second of the critical pedagogy events, and is about engaging critical pedagogy to explore questions about education and learning.

A couple of days off until a double whammy on Saturday when we are going to be at Leeds Met for the Reimagine the University Education Activist Network conference (10 to 5) and also at the Leeds Summat at Leeds University Union (from 9am. see www.summat.org for timetable and details). Unable to stay out of the Space for long we'll go back down to 37-38 Mabgate Green for food and drinks and banner making at the N30/EAN Leeds social at 6pm.

Another busy one on Sunday when we'll be strolling round town with Shaun Cohen for the Radical History Walk. Start of at 2.30pm from the Space and uncover the underground history of our city til about 4pm.
A few hours rest until 7.30 when our friends Occupied London will be up to talk about the Revolt and Crisis in Greece, and how it can inform and engage struggle here.

If you want to know more, or you want to distribute flyers and help out, or even if you have some spare bob you want to donate to us to keep us up and running, do check out our website www.spaceproject.org.uk, find us on Facebook and like our page, drop us an email at [email protected] or come to one of our events.

open house meeting tonight at the Space Project 8pm!

In January Leeds Radical Library will be starting up a new discussion/reading group series. We will be looking at 'Crisis.' Check out the blurb below!

From bankrupt PIGS, revolting Greeks and an £1 trillion hole in Italy abroad, to riots, banker bailouts and strikes at home, wherever you look these days there's banter about 'crisis'. But what crisis? Where, and for whom? Facilitated by Leeds Radical Library, this first discussion series, Crisis!, aims to provide a lively forum for debate about some of the key issues of our time: what is capitalism and why does it seem to break again and again? Taking short, weekly texts as a starting point, we want to explore the history of capitalist crisis to find out what 'our crisis' has in common with previous crises, and what might be unique about it. While economists and bankers whom we've never met or elected seem able to make more and more decisions about the way we run our lives, Crisis! aims to unravel from the very beginning the modern day myths about 'finance', 'capital' and 'democracy'.
