Athene Environmental and members of the local community, in a voluntary capacity, and in partnership with Oldham Council’s Parks and Public Health Departments, have worked on the site of the unused bowling green and building to create a sustainability centre. The centre is a ‘learning by doing' resource for schools, community groups, organisations and individuals. The building and bowling green ar

e used for the growing organic fruit and vegetables and educational sessions with a wide range of community groups and schools covering all aspects of sustainability. We grow with nature in mind; for example, we have installed a wildlife pond that has several species of invertebrates and amphibians breeding in it. The idea is that we provide a resource for such wildlife, which then help us by eating pests, for example, frogs and hedgehogs eating the slugs, snails etc.
