Week 1: Discover & Notice

Day 4 🐌

A little pond dip in my wildlife pond and I found this little snail. I've tried to ID them but as there are about 40 different species of water snails in the UK I'm a little out of my depth!

Week 1: Discover & Notice

Day 3 🌳

I admire my neighbor's poplar trees every single day - they are beautiful to look at in the sun, the sound of wind blowing through the leaves is so peaceful, and they provide a safe habitat for numerous critters and creatures including our resident squirrels.

Week 1: Discover & Notice

Day 2 πŸ›

Today I went in search of butterflies and spotted this web of ermine moth caterpillars in my apple tree. Some gardeners would remove these, but as the damage they cause is only temporary I will leave them be - moths and butterflies need all the help they can get!

It's that time of year again for !

Week 1: Discover & Notice

Day 1 🐝

We recently discovered that our bees had swarmed twice this spring, first with the prime swarm led by Queen Winnie which we didn't even notice leaving, and again with a cast swarm that we were lucky enough to spot hanging under their old hive. We took this opportunity to requeen the main hive (with hope to promote more gentle genetics) but also kept the cast swarm with Winnie's heir as a backup. Today was our first spot check on both hives and I'm happy to report that we found fresh eggs laid by our new and accepted Queen Adela, and as a bonus we also spotted this beautiful new Queen nestled in the cast swarm too.

As the winter garden remains mostly dormant, I wanted to take this time to reflect on what I was proud to be a part of last year.

I am incredibly proud of the progress our small team of volunteers has made with the Avenue Community Garden. It is now not only a home for a wide biodiversity of flora and fauna, but also has solid foundations and structures for the community to engage with and enjoy. A potting shed was funded by the local community, compost bins were gifted and filled with twigs, leaves and Halloween pumpkins, a seating area has been furnished with donations of ornamental and edible plants, shrubs and trees, a mountain of wood chip was dropped off by a local arborist and shovelled to form pathways, and a giant bug hotel was built from foraged materials during an open day community event.

At home my own garden took a bit of a step back, but we were still kept busy with our wonderfully strong hive led by Queen Winnie who we upgraded to a beautiful horizontal hive, we built a reclaimed brick patio which also provides a sandy habitat in the garden, and I relined our small wildlife pond three times(!) due to leaks, I now wait in anxious anticipation of frogspawn in the coming weeks.

I was dead chuffed to spot this tiny leafcutter bee building a nest in one of my solitary bee hotels. They've sat largely empty for about a year, so perhaps they are now sufficiently weathered to be considered suitable?

Here's a few more of my local insects (and a bonus mollusc!) for ...

22nd - 25th

〰️ - I think this is a marmalade hoverfly with distinctive moustache shaped black bands on it's abdomen

πŸ¦‹ - I found these ruby red gems hiding inside one of my pots when potting up my geraniums. They look like moth pupae, so I've popped them in a tray with some soil so I can identify them once they emerge

πŸͺ° - I believe this gentle giant is a hornet mimic hoverfly, the largest hoverfly species in the UK. It's beautifully coloured abdomen looks almost velvety

πŸ›- I spotted this brightly coloured caterpillar in the community garden, we think it is likely a cinnabar moth caterpillar. The bright colouration warns predators that it is poisonous from the ragwort they eat

🐌 - this tiny snail is living inside the roof of my compost bin, I think it is a slippery snail of the cochlicopa family, preferring to live in damp environments eating decaying plant matter and fungi

🐞 21st - this year our bramley apple tree has been suffering with aphids curling up most of the leaves, but have no fear the cavalry is here!

On one of the leaves we spotted these ladybird pupa in their final stage of development before emerging as adults.

πŸ•·οΈ 20th - I've been sharing my garden outbuilding with these spindly spiders for over two years now, but I've never known what species they were. They seem to thrive in the damp and dark environment, spinning plenty of cobwebs in the rafters.

We think these may be cellar spiders, or pholcidae, but please correct me if I'm wrong!

Week 3 of ...

🐦 12th - collected this freebie bird feeder, gave it a good clean, topped it up, and hastily placed it in the community garden to avoid being electrocuted by the thunderstorm!

🌼 13th - learned how to identify elderflowers apart from similar poisonous flowers. I'm spotting elder all the time now, but I'm still on the hunt for some not growing at the side of a road so I can have a go at making elderflower cordial

🐝 14th - we gave my parents a hand with their first inspection of their newly settled honeybee swarm. Queen Eris is now happily laying and her workers are busy building beautiful natural comb

🌹 15th - spotted this gorgeous rose growing at the side of the road, so I've taken a cutting which I'm hoping will successfully root

🍯 16th - spent the evening making up new honey super frames for Queen Winnie & co who are ready for an expansion, hopefully a sign of a honey harvest to come!

🌺 17th - a busy day of volunteering at the community garden, followed by an inspection of Queen Winnie where we gave her the extra super, before collecting these beautiful amaranthus donated for the community garden

🐸 18th - a lovely day spent with my family included a bug hunt with my two nephews where we did a little pond dip to search for critters

Yesterday I had the truly magical experience of collecting this beautiful honey bee swarm resting in a brick arch surrounded by hanging wisteria blossom. Initially my husband and I thought it could be two swarms due to the distinctly separate clusters, but after leaving the hived bees until nightfall to settle down we discovered that they had all moved into the one hive together.
