🧹 Cleaner streets are one of the clearest priorities emerging from the Leicester Listens Survey.

Residents are telling us about litter, fly-tipping, weeds, overflowing bins and public spaces that are not being maintained consistently.

Several people have also made an important point: keeping Leicester clean requires proper council services, stronger enforcement and greater responsibility from everyone who uses our streets and parks.

These are early findings but the message so far is difficult to miss.

Very saddened to hear of the passing of Nick Rushton, former Leader of Leicestershire County Council.

Nick was a stalwart of Leicestershire’s political life and a truly dedicated public servant who gave many years of committed leadership to our county.

I have fond memories of serving with him on the Combined Fire Authority, which he chaired. He always called me “Rae” my middle name and it was only after two years that someone pointed out to him that it wasn’t actually my first name! We all had a good laugh about it.

My sincere condolences to his family, friends and all who had the privilege of knowing and working with him.

May he rest in eternal peace.

Residents across Leicester are still waiting for long-promised road repairs and the removal of dangerous temporary bollards (supposedly cycle lanes).

Some of these issues have been raised repeatedly for over a year.

At a recent full council meeting, conservative councillors asked the council for a clear timetable, because residents deserve answers as well as action.

Statement from Leicester Conservatives on Local Government Reorganisation

Today’s decision is a disappointing day for local democracy.

More than 11,000 residents signed a petition opposing Leicester’s boundary expansion, yet their concerns have been brushed aside. People were told they would be listened to. Instead, a major change affecting communities across Leicester and Leicestershire has been imposed from the top down.

Decisions of this scale should command public confidence and be built on meaningful engagement with the people they affect.

The reorganisation also brings an end to Leicester's directly elected City Mayor. For years, Leicester Conservatives have argued that too much power has been concentrated in one office.

Too many important decisions have been taken without meaningful scrutiny, leaving too many residents feeling shut out of decisions affecting their neighbourhoods. Leicester needs proper scrutiny, stronger accountability and a council that listens before it acts.

The irony is that, after years of defending the mayoral system, Labour now sees it abolished as a direct consequence of the reorganisation it supported.

Residents will judge this change on something much simpler: will it make their streets cleaner, their neighbourhoods safer and their council services better?

Changing boundaries means very little if the same problems remain.

Too many neighbourhoods feel neglected in Leicester. Residents tell us they are concerned about antisocial behaviour, litter, poor roads and pavements, declining public spaces and council spending that does not reflect their priorities.

A future Conservative-led council will put residents and neighbourhoods first. We will restore proper democratic scrutiny, publish clear standards for council services and judge every major decision by whether it delivers cleaner streets, safer communities, better roads and better value for taxpayers.

People are tired of decisions being done to them rather than with them.

Leicester deserves a council that listens first, delivers on the basics and earns residents' trust every single day.

🆕 NEW: Almost £10 million of Government funding has been redirected to Leicester Railway Station in an attempt to get the City Mayor’s long-delayed redevelopment project moving again.

We welcome investment in Leicester. A modern railway station should attract visitors, support businesses, create good local jobs and provide a better first impression of our city.

But residents deserve some answers from the City Mayor.

🚧 Demolition work began years ago, yet the City Mayor’s own report says major construction may not begin until 2028, with completion not expected until 2030.

❓If almost £10 million of additional Government funding has now been secured, why are residents still being asked to wait years before major work begins?

This decision has also come at a cost.

Nearly £10 million has been taken from the City Mayor’s original St Margaret’s Junction improvement scheme to help fund the railway station instead. The City Mayor now needs to explain exactly what has been removed from the original plans and whether the scaled-back scheme will still tackle congestion, improve safety and support the area around St Margaret’s Bus Station.

We support investment that helps Leicester grow, attracts new businesses and creates good local jobs. Public investment should also unlock private investment and deliver lasting benefits for residents.

After years of delays, the City Mayor must now provide clear answers on when work will finally begin, what residents will receive for the money and how he will ensure there are no further delays or cost increases.

Investment is welcome. Residents now expect delivery, value for money and a council that gets the basics right. 💙
