Leicester families are about to be hit with a 5% council tax rise, again, and Labour Councillors are lowering expectations even further.
We all know the story in Leicester. Bills go up, and the Labour-run council warns of a “squeeze” on public services. They’ve been doing it for years.
They admit spending will outstrip income by ÂŁ15m, and they are relying on reserves to balance the books. The City Mayor even says those reserves could run out in about three years.
So what do residents get for paying more?
➡️ More delays and excuses.
➡️ Housing repairs that drag on while families live with damp and mould.
➡️ Children waiting too long for SEND support while parents get fobbed off.
➡️ Cuts to the simple things that keep neighbourhoods decent, libraries, community centres, adventure playgrounds, the basics.
➡️ A city centre that feels mismanaged, hurting jobs, pay, and footfall.
➡️ And taxpayers still picking up the tab when Labour gets big decisions wrong.
Labour’s answer? More of the same. They point to small bits of help for a limited number of households, while talking about £82.8m of capital spend next year, including £50m on temporary accommodation. And let’s not forget their national promise ahead of the General Election to freeze Council Tax.
Last year we proposed a budget that would have focused on delivery, value for money, and services residents actually notice, but Labour voted it down. We will keep pushing for basic services that work.
Leicester first. Vanity projects last.
Do you feel like you’re paying more and getting less? Time to change how Leicester is run. ✅
