Damp and mould can cause serious health problems.

Private landlords should take damp and mould seriously. They should try to find out what’s causing the problem, and not blame you for it without investigating.

Our online advice tells you how you can deal with damp and mould, including:

· reporting the problem with our letter template

· landlord inspections

· damp and mould your landlord must fix

· condensation problems

· help from environmental health at the council

· complaints and compensation

You might have heard that big changes are coming for renters now the Renters’ Rights Act has Royal Assent.

But for now, your rights stay the same. Changes will start from 2026.

New rights for private renters will include:

· section 21 ‘no fault’ eviction is ending

· no more fixed term tenancies

· assured tenancies with strong protection from eviction for most private renters

· a 1 month cap on rent in advance

· changes to how your landlord can increase your rent

🚨 Councils and housing associations now have to fix emergency hazards within 24 hours. 🚨

Emergency hazards are problems that could cause you or someone you live with serious harm if they aren't fixed by this deadline.

They include:
➡️ gas leaks
➡️ burst water main pipes
➡️ dangerous electrical wiring
➡️ serious damp and mould that causes breathing problems
➡️ no hot water or heating – especially in cold weather

Fixing the problem can include temporary measures to make your home safe. For example, a mould treatment.
If they cannot make your home safe in 24 hours, they must offer you free temporary rehousing.
Your landlord must also do any further work that’s needed to stop emergency hazards coming back.

The Renters’ Rights Bill has gained Royal Assent! 🎉

This is a historic win for renters. When implemented it means the end of no fault Section 21 evictions.

This wouldn’t have happened without the thousands of you who stood up, shared your stories and demanded change.

We’re now waiting for the government to announce when these new rights will be implemented.
